the car is a 76 dart sport slant 6 its cranks slow even when cold after its running if you shut off the car and try to start again if it dont fire in the first few cranks it wont start feels like your draining the battery. The battery cables are pretty warm, the battery is smaller one but its only a few months old. Im not sure if its a starter problem or a battery cable issue. The battery holds at 12v so i know the battery is good, the charging system is really strong charging at 14v when running everything seems normal with the car. But everything is OEM on the car (30+ years old) not sure which thing to replace first. Thanks in advance |

A fully-charged "12 volt" battery in good condition will read 12.6 volts. Run the engine at a fast idle for five minutes or so with no electrical accessories turned on, then shut off the engine and turn on the high-beam headlights for two minutes. Turn them off, then measure across the battery. If it shows 12.5 or lower, replace the battery. If it shows 12.6, then other suspects include the starter, the positive battery cable, and the negative battery cable. |

the fact that the cable are getting warm is def a sigh of high amperage. i might suspect a starter, unless you cables/connections are crapped out |

If the starter's armature bushings get worn and the armature drags it will do this. This happened to my High School's Dodge shop truck. The starter was drawing over 400 amps. ![]() |
