Post subject:  Sure Grip vs Detroit Locker

What are the advantages of a Detroit locker or a Sure grip. I know the cone type posi aren't very serviceable compared to to the clutch type posi but I have never had a Detroit locker or even driven in many cars with a locker.

I wouldn't use a locker on a street car......... Either both wheels are driven, or 1 wheel freewheels for differential action; nothing inbetween.

I'd look into a truetrac.

It's a gear-driven limited slip that doesn't need special gear oil, and doesn't have any clutches to wear out.

Agreed. Truetrac or clutch suregrip, or new Auburn posi unit.

Even though my 66 car is street legal I don't drive it much on the street and I really want to use it for racing. That's the plan at least. I have a 65 car that I want to fix up for the street.

For street/strip and not worrying about other things (handling, unlock/lock transitions), the Detroit Locker would work fine. The Suregrip/Auburn would work very well too, as would the truetrac, on the strip. For just drag racing, just get a spool.

I had an auburn in a 93 mustang that I wasn't very happy with, after about 6 months of hard use/abuse it wasn't much of a posi anymore. That is why I was looking for a clutch type posi when I found a good deal on a 489 cased Detroit locker.

Well I bought the 3rd member with the Detroit locker, its a 489 case that had been rebuilt 2 years ago with the locker, gears and new bearings.
