I was thinking of buying this stuff or something close, http://www.allstategasket.com/info_gask ... e-1154.asp and making my own. I ordered the good rubber one, but i'm just curious what tolerances the rubber needs. |

OK, I give. Why would you want to do this? What's wrong with the black rubber ones you can buy for less than the cost of the SBR rubber sheet? |

well, i was thinking if i could make 2 or 3 out of one sheet, i could save time and money. Maybe make the 1st one a full "ring", and the 2nd and 3rd one as two piece gaskets, using red high temp silicone to connect them. You would think that in NY you can get parts easy, but they cater to new cars, and ricers. In the past month i've had alot of problems with the local stores. For example, i've had the offy cover for about a year, and finally decided to install it. I ordered the 2 grommets, and breather a month ago, and in the 3 times i went back, they had the wrong parts. I even gave them the part numbers. I wound up ordering through rock auto, and paid $8 shipping on $7 in parts. The same thing happened with the rubber gasket, so i ordered it online last thursday. Hopefully it comes in tomorrow. I guess it's frustration more than anything. I like to start and finish a project the same day, or at worst 2 days. |

Yeah, I have done that, but I won't do it again. I have been thinking about machining a thicker valve cover flange, with a groove for an o ring, but I have not tried that yet |

I've never had much trouble sealing a /6 valve cover. Most times when the cover won't seal it's been over tightened and the areas around the bolt holes have been pulled down in relation to the rest of the sealing surface so it leaks between the bolts. I had one valve cover that was so bad the washer on one or two bolts made semi-circular cuts through the cover. I brazed washers around the bolt holes to repair the cover. What I do on merely deformed covers is turn the valve cover over on a block of wood and tap down the raised areas around the bolt holes. On transmission and oil pans (as they are made of heavier gauge steel) I rest the ball of a ball-peen hammer in the bolt hole and hit the first hammer with another to undo damage from over tightened bolts. |

What I would like to see is a steel-core, ribbed silicone valve cover gasket like you can get for the LA and B/RB V8s. |
