Everyone knows the slant 6 is a VERY reliable, and durable engine.I once had one in a 74 Scamp that at idle the oil light would be solid red,and at speed it would flicker. I put in a manual gauge and at idle I was reading 0 PSI and at speed it was running about 10-15 PSI.

I ran the car about 3 months like this and eventually bought an oil pump and that cured the trouble.

That being said, last year I bought a 75 Valiant 4 door with a ventilated 225 slant 6.Just by looking at the engine you couldnt tell it had a windowed block.

Only after I got to tearing the engine apart did I notice 2 holes(Made from chunks fron the #6 connecting rod cap). One hole behind the starter and one behind the exhaust manifold. The rod of #6 was an "S" shape when I pulled it out the bore.

Someone told me this kind of exact failure was pretty common on Slant 6 engines, anyone have similar experiences?

A friend of mine had a 73 Duster with a slant 6 (now it's my brother's with a 440), but the slant six spun the #6 cylinder rod bearing, and was parked right away. Had he driven longer, it would have thrown that rod.

"Pretty common" isn't accurate. It's more like relatively common — they seldom fail "hard" like this, but when they do, it's fairly likely to be at #5 or #6.

What is it about #5 and #6 that is a weakness when they do fail?

The SL6 oiling system lay-out in the most likely cause.
See the RPM Thread for a more detailed discussion.

My experience.......

When I rebuilt mine due to a bad oil filter (collapsed inside of 50 miles after an oil change and would not bypass any oil), shutting off all oil pressure to the engine at 60 mph on the freeway, only did damage to the first 2 rod bearings. I put on a new filter and drove it another 60 miles home. On tear down the first two rods had turned black and the bearing #1 and #2 scratched the crank to where I had it turned down and re-polished and balanced. The other rods and rod bearings were fine. At the time I had 385,000 miles on the engine and the engine ran perfectly on 10-30 Valvoline synthetic oil.

No loose #5 or #6 rod caps and the bearings looked fine.

The new engine is running on 0-30 Mobil 1 and has about 40,000 on it to date.

I ran across a slant several months back that actually cranked up before I noticed the fist-sized hole next to the #1 hole..
Needless to say, it didn't run very well, but it did run.

Rug_Trucker,

At the time I was working 12 and 14 hour days always driving to work in the dark and very late at night. I had stopped by our local Valvoline oil change place one night for a quick oil change and grease job. The old owner new I liked the NAPA 1515 Gold filter and always had a case of them for my cars, two 440 cars and the SL6.
He sold the place and the new owner put on their stock filter which is called a "Mighty". Dan correct me, but I think it might be the same mfg. as the Champion series.....
Oil tests from the lab on the engine oil came back with no contamination, all checks were better than acceptable. It should have, the oil only had about 120 miles on it at that point. When they tested the filter it took over 70 pounds before it would clear and that was when the bypass valve started working. Needless to say my oil pump only puts out 50 lbs. pressure so it couldn't clear the collapsed filter.

What a hard lesson to learn.........I buy the NAPA 1806 filters now and always take time to change my own oil, 0-30W Mobil 1 synthetic. I only let them grease the car and change tranny fluids/filter and rear end fluids with synthetic.

Mighty filters and Champion=Fram? I don't usually do Wix but use Pure1.

I am guessing filters are the next thing to go Chinese?

Buy GUD from RSA - have always been the local manufacturer for BMW, CHRYSLER,Benz, VW, Audi, and yes even Toyota and Nissan.

Fram is made here as well and After cutting open a new fram and a new GUD...

The GUD is is so much better engineered - More pleats in the filter material, better supported structurally.

Had a look at my TDi Jettafilter the other day - the people who last serviced it fitted a fram - developed a noisy lifter shortly after that -

Changed the oil Castrol SLX pro VW spec 505-1 - and the filter - a gud - compared a new gud to a new fram in the shop - the gud came with alle the neccecary o rings - the fam did - but they where not 100% the correct size. the gud had more pleats - more filter area and the filter material is thicker

Same goes for the valiant sized air filters- 14 inch GUD 127 - GUD has a steel mesh support on the inside and the sealing ribs is more pronounced - not the fram...

TDI has a cartridge filter BTW - clearly labeled top and bottom the fram not

and I did a dan based flush on the engine - crikey

my 5 cents have not napa gold but do have GUD :D

"Mighty" is one of many cheapo (oops, "value-priced" or "margin-enhancing", depending on who's being talked to) off-brands of parts often supplied through franchise oil change shacks and discount auto parts stores. Pennzoil's another.

Chinese filters are already in the market; even once-reputable Baldwin is phasing them in. Uhhh...yeah, how 'bout a Chinese-made fuel filter sitting right near my hot engine? No thanks! How long before I no longer have a choice?
