Post subject:  A/C oil choice
Quick question. I am rebuilding my a/c system on my 73 duster. I will be putting R12 back in it. I've put a new seal in the compressor and have all new o-rings. My question is can I use ester oil in the system (which I can get easily) or do I have to use mineral oil. I know PAG and r12 don't mix.

I've tried to drain as much of the old mineral oil out of the compressor that I can and will be using a new drier. I've read some articles that say ester and mineral don't mix well and others that say they mix fine (Ah the internet). I need the expert answer...Iam sure Dan will have a good answer.....yes

use mineral oil. That is what the system was designed for.

I wouldn't use ester oil with R12. I'd probably try and find mineral oil, though if I'm remembering correctly, I've got this stuff in my '89 D100 with R12. See what Charrlie_S has to say.

Dan, I'm supprised at you. Never heard of that stuff, before, but it sounds like snake oil, to me. I am not a fan of "one size fits all" items. There are many different types and viscositys of A/C oils, even in mineral oils.

If it is hard to locate the mineral oil in a parts store, go to a residential/commercial HVAC supplier, and ask for some 525 viscosity mineral oil, for use with R-22.

I would've left the Polymax on the shelf if I'd been asked about it — circumstances at the time (2003 or so) prevented me installing and charging the system myself, and the Polymax oil was in the system when I got the keys back. I recall being annoyed at having not been asked. The system's worked okay, mechanically, since then; it has one of those Chinese-copycat C171 compressors on it that has never been quiet. If it eventually fails, maybe I'll be able to tell if it was because of being a copycat POS compressor or because of having non-mineral oil in it... :roll:

I have had decent luck with those compressors. The big problem is, as far as I know the Chinese compressor is the only way to get a NEW C-171. The only other option is a reman, and I know they suck. Most remans only have a 90 day warrantee.

Yeah, we get a choice between new crapola and remanufactured crapola. Fun times we live in. At one point I had P/Ns for the Sanden compressors w/C171 mount points, but those were made specially for Chrysler, are no longer made, and I don't think I've ever actually seen one.

Thanks Guys

I hate Napa here in Canada they never have anything and when they do it's 3x the price of Napa in the US. I'll try a local HVAC company and see where I get otherwise it will be a trip to the states yet again.....I found this on ebay price looks right

Part price is OK, but the shipping makes it a deal breaker for me.
Go to any auto part store, that has 4 Seasons, or Factory Air parts and ask for part number 59000. If the sore does not carrty that brand, they should be able to cross the number to their brand.

Well none of the places I contacted had any mineral oil and some didn't even know what I was talking about. Napa here in Canada only sells ESTER and PAG oil and their ester is $20 a 8oz bottle compared to the 7 bucks in the states. Since I am down to the states all the time anyway I figured I would just buy this stuff and save all the running around. A friend of mine works at a commercial HVAC company and they have ester by the 45 gallon drum full but not so of mineral. Oh well.

Thanks for the advice... looking forward to having to use the artificial cold air next year! We have plenty of the naturally cold stuff here now. YUCK!
