Busted the collar on the column where the shifter inserts into the column? You might be able to find a replacement at a junkyard, but it won't be easy to come by. 3 on the tree is quite rare nowadays. What part of the 3 on the tree do you not understand? It's really quite simple when you break it down.

So far as a 4 speed goes, the only 4 speed conversion that I know of that is common is swapping to a np435 4 speed. This has the shifter bolted directly to the top of the trans IIRC, and will bolt right into your truck. You may need to snag a different driveline, along with cutting/welding a hole in the floorboard for the shifter to come through. You will find those lurking under the 3/4 ton and up trucks. Not to mention some buses etc.

The column shifted trannies work just fine, but you have a 1/2 ton pickup, so it will be fine so long as you don't try to pull a house behind it... or maybe it will...

My own personal preference is the 3 speed, just because I like the way that it works... plus people give you wierd looks as you are driving down the road in "Park" lol.

I would shoot for getting the current setup fixed if possible, and if not, then an np435 is what I recommend for a swap, since parts are easier to find. Good luck!

Hello,

I don't know what you mean by "collar"? are you talking about the clamp at the floor, or the ring that holds the turn signal switch...or? I have a '64 d100 but since column shifts are largely unchanged since WWII they are basically all the same. My FSM and my parts catalog have good pics of what is in a column shifter and I would email you a .pdf if you email me at rock at intrex dot net

My bushings wore out on my 3 speed to an A745 so I swapped in a 4 speed A833OD. Not too difficult and I didn't even have to cut out the crossmember. I posted a lot about this about 2 years ago and you can find it in search. I consider this a 'standard" swap, and knowing everyone has opinions I don't care for the NP435 because of its weight.

If you have a hydraulic clutch and you fork is on the passenger side then you will have to adapt to a fork on the driver side if adding an 833. No sweat, I used the old slave master cylinder to make a pull slave work the fork. Just look in some old posts. Love those trucks!

I would try to fix the collar. I have a 63 d100 with a NP435 and its a dog. I do have a 71 d100 (72 and later bodystyle)with a three on the tree, converted to floor shifter. We cut a hole in the floor, and had to hack a little of the frame for it to clear. We bought the shifter from pep boys for 40 bux, back in 1996. It works great, and the gear configuration is awesome at

R 2
1 3

its a heck of a lot easier to drive. best thing we did after the original gears kept binding. I will be pulling the column to swap for a regular column with no shifter. If there is anything you might need, let me know.

Hi cowboy,

Like 63 says, nuttin to it either way. I have the template for the hole I cut in mine to put in a Pep Boy floor shifter in 1975, and have the floor shifter too, cause I pulled it for the 4 speed 833. If you want to try to fix the 3 speed, I have a complete set of everything that goes inside the column, and everything outside such as levers and shift rods. If you want the shifter and the column assembly, I will let you have it free, if you pay shipping. Just lemme know.
