on my 78 Fury when I got it, even though it was FULL it would never show over ~3/8 of a tank; I wound up having to pull the tank and have it steamed and coated (it was pretty nasty as this car has very low original miles) and it wound up that the float had a hole in it and was partly filled when I pulled it which kept it from "float"-ing. |

Go to an electronics shop like radio shack and buy a 8-10 OHM resistor. It will cost less than $2. connect one side to the sending unit wire, and other side to a CLEAN,SOLID part of the frame.Start the car,and the gauge should read full tank.If it works, either the fuel tank isn,t grounded(most likely problem)or it,s the sender |

Loss of ground and sunk float are two common causes for this problem. The float can't be had separately from Chrysler any more, but it can be had from Ford. See this post for info. Replace the strainer while you're in there! If it turns out your float's OK and sender's well grounded but not working, new ones are available. And, last but not first: does your engine temperature gauge work? If not, then the most likely cause of both gauge failures is a faulty instrument cluster voltage regulator. |

Today, I watched my gas gauge drop all the way to E in a matter of seconds. It never goes above half anyway. My temp guage has never worked as long as I have had the car, So my guess is its the voltage regulator. How do I go about getting a new one? Do they sell them in the part stores? Another question, why does ferd sell a Chrysler float? |

Post subject: | cluster regulator |
its not the voltage regulater, its the instrument cluster regulator, a small metal box that gives the gauges 5 volts. It ca be had at rockauto . com but its pricey (50 ish?). you can go to radioshack if you got some sodering skills, too cheaper. I fyou do a search on "gauges not working "or in the articles section here too.l read it up! troubleshooting tips too |

There is an article for the early A-Bodies, but not the later ones. I really can't part with $50 bucks for a .05 cent piece right now. What are the alternatives? I was thinking about installing aftermarket gauges, is this the time to do that? |

$34 at RockAuto for a new factory-type instrument cluster voltage limiter. Or go read this and make your own. You'll spend more in money and time to put in aftermarket gauges than to fix the ones you have. |

Might want to give one of these a try, I just got one: http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/RTE_limiter |

Well, I think I might give making my own a shot.Or go read this and make your own. Quote: You'll spend more in money and time to put in aftermarket gauges than to fix the ones you have.
Not really. My ammeter is shot, the lights don't work, none of the gauges work, and my speedo is in pretty bad shape. Plus they look like crap, and not to mention some of the pins on the back are starting to come off. I have new aftermarket gauges and speedo already, and it will cost about 60 bucks for the rest. I will then have working gauges/lights and my speedo will bounce no more. I can't send my gauges to be rebuilt, because remember, I drive this thing every day. Now that would cost more time and money! |
