Usually it means that a rod broke in half and blew a hole in the block. So you will need to buy a engine and use the one in the car for spare parts.

You will need to rebuild the engine, depending on how bad it is, the block may be no good. Blowing a rod means that either there's a rod hanging out of the block, I have 2 SL6's in that condition, or that he broke one of the rods, or it's connecting hardware. If you aren't comfortable having to find a new block, I'd pass.

Well, I would go look in person. The guy may or may not know what he is talking about. I have heard people say a slant six has thrown a rod when the problem was actually (1) misadjusted valves, (2) dead water pump bearings, (3) dead alternator bearings, (4) the oil dipstick hitting the crank, etc....

Go and look at the engine. Ifyou see a hole in the block, a crack in the block, or if the motor won't turn over, then yes, you will need to pull and replace/rebuild the motor.

I've heard the phrasing "threw a rod", but not "blew a rod". If I heard that, I'd be looking for a windowed block!
"Blew" I hear more in connection with headgaskets and occasionally hoses. Not to be confused with "Blew up", which covers a number of catastrophic failures.
Ahh, the joys of slang.

The engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
If you are not equiped to swap an engine then that car may not be a good deal for you.
