I have a 81 D150 , what would be a good ignition-on 12v source in the engine bay for my HEI relay ? It will be on the passenger side beside my radiator. I still have all of my lean burn wiring still intact. Thanks Dave |

One of the blue wires comging off of the alternator (trace it to the choke). |

Thanks Reed I'll check on that later, would that be the same wire that is plugged in ,were the choke is also plugged into. Dave |

The alternator has the big cable that is secured by a nut and two smaller wires that attach with spade connectors. The big cable with the nut is the (+) battery feed. you don't want that one. You want to tap into one of the wires that attaches with a spade terminal. Alternatively, you can splice into the wire that feeds the choke. |

I would use the original coil + otherwise it might not have power during cranking. |

Joshie225, That is what I was thinking about first , but I was not sure if it would work with the relay. |

Just picking either of the alternator field wires at random is definitely not a good choice for a +12v source with ignition key on. You don't want to interfere with voltage regulation. Better to go to the ballast resistor on the firewall, unplug both connectors from it, figure out which connector has +12v with the ignition key in the "on" position, and use that. Since you'll be bypassing the ballast resistor to install the HEI, you can also just use the original coil + wire as Josh suggests. |

Dan, I do not think I have a ballast resistor , but I think I will use the original coil + wire. It is starting to come around , hopefully after the first of the year it will be on the road. Dave |
