Post subject:  Heated Air
I cant get that pice of crap heated air intake on the air cleaner to work! I have changed the "thermostat" thing on the air cleaner, and tried the vac hoses in different configurations, but it still won't work. Can someone help me fix this thing?

You changed the thermostat 'inside' the bottom of the air cleaner, right?
The actuator on top of the snorkel is just the actuator. The hose routing should go from the air cleaner port on the carb , to the underside of the aircleaner to one of the thermostat nipples, the other then goes fromthe other connection to the connection on the actuator on top of the snorkel.

You got a manual for your car?

The diaphram inside the actuator that raises the door in the snorkle is probably ruptured. If you suck on the hose that goes to the acuator, does the door go up?

Yes its the one inside the bottom of the air cleaner, and the actuator works if you suck on the hose. No matter which nipple I hook either one of the hoses up to, it sucks air through that thing that sticks up on it inside the air cleaner, and I have no vac going to the actuator. In other words, I have vac going to the thermostat, and no vac going to the actuator.

I have a 1977 Motor manual that covers my car, but I do not have a factory service manual. Too expensive. But if your talking about an owners manual, than yes. :)

The factory service manual isn't optional, it's really necessary. Even at full regular retail price, it's an extremely cost-effective purchase. You shouldn't have to pay full retail, though; keep your eyes open on eBay and remember that a '74 Plymouth or Dodge FSM will work just as well. You also want the other two books in this thread. Sounds like the replacement thermostat you installed is bad...where'd it come from?

I see you live in Kentucky. How cold does it get? When I repaired the heated air system in my brother's van, the ambient temperature was 60-80 degrees. No surprise, the thermostatically controlled system wouldn't open. I stuck the air cleaner in the freezer for 15 minutes and VOILA! the heated air system worked, until the thermostat warmed up again.

My point is that the ambient air temperature might be too high for your thermostat to open the air door. Try sticking your air cleaner in the freezer and THEN applying vacuum. But do it quickly since the thermostat warms up fast.

The system tries to maintain air temp going to the carb at between 80 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is working properly, the damper will go to "hot air" position when the engine is started from cold at pretty much any ambient temperature below 85°F, and even then it'll briefly close on cold start. If you have to put it in the freezer to get it to go to "hot air" position, the thermostat's not working right.

Hmmmmm. Well, the day I tested it it was pretty hot out. But it worked after the freezer. Who knows.

The thermostat I replaced it with, was from another air cleaner. I have three of them, one worked once, the other too never worked. As for how cold it gets, its been about 35-50 degrees all day for the past three weeks or more. It does still get pretty cold down here. Cold enough that I have froze my behind off for the last few weeks, no matter what time of day, due to no heat. Im getting heat this weekend! Yay! :D

I will work on getting that FSM ASAP!

Ahh...that's probably your problem, then, is replacing one used thermostat that doesn't work with another used thermostat that doesn't work! :o The supply of new ones is rapidly drying up, but I have a bunch of them; send me a PM if you'd like one.
