Post subject:  Help for a Turbo 225

I need help. I'm going for the shock and ahw. I was going with a 600 hp v8 but calculating the cost of that build including the drive chain mods, I've decided to go with a turbo six. Car is currently a 73 dart sport with a 225 and a 904 and a 7.25 rear, don't know the gear ratio, all stock. This will be a draw through system. I'm confused with what carb, compression ration and what size turbo. Will a 7.3 ford turbo work? I have 2. Car will be 3000lb.

I think the turbo is going to be way too big,I,m running one off a 6.5GM diesel,it doesn,t produce any boost until 2,500 RPM.

FYI...
I have always had trouble getting a carburator to work well with a turbo.
Think about when turbos on factory cars became more common... it was after they started using EFI with the them.

Go dig around www.theturboforums.com for a ton of sizing info. They even have a separate section for carbs.

I have a stock slant with a draw thru set-up. The set up is off of a 231 buick. They come off of 301 pontiac's too a little different. The carb is a new 600 edlebrock, works fine so far. As for compression, the turbo will do that for you so stock is fine. Unless your trying run the dog crap out of it and beat that 600hp v8 idea...heh

is it feasible to use a custom TBI system and just blow through the throttle body?

Sure. Just keep the fuel pressure regulator referenced to the pressure above the throttle plates and run a fuel pump with enough pressure and flow capacity. If the fuel pressure regulator's vent is inside the air horn you should be fine.

V8 H8r, Your user name is sooooo. anti V8, anyway welcome to the form, would you mind posting some more pics of your setup?

I just Bought the Turbo you have.. I has no Factory Buick Wastegate attached to it. I am going to use it with EFI, but I am specifically Interested in your boost control.. I see that the Factory Wastegate port on your turbo is Blocked off and It looks like you run a poppet valve to control overboost instead?

Do I need a blowoff valve on the intake tract after the compressor before the throttle valve? If I use this turbo with a blow thru EFI system?

Thanks, Greg

I see an external wastegate down low. Blowoff valves benefit most any engine with a turbo or supercharger that sits before the throttle.

The name was a quickly thought up one after trying about 5 other names and they were already taken I just tried this one. I do own a v8 and don't hate all of them. Just tired of seeing the same thing all the time.

The wastegate is a Turbonetics Evolution Wastegate. The turbo guy recommend it and got it for me when I had him rebuild the turbo due to shaft play. It comes with different springs for boost regulation. It tells you were to mount it and how to hook it up. I ran it back into the exhaust. Very nice set-up. A bit expensive, but the turbo and carb cost more than the rest of the car... Here's another pic(you'll like this one)

So In My Planned setup.. Since the Turbo I bought Does not have the Factory Wastegate off the 231 Buick I should plumb one like in the pics on this thread with a blowoff valve too?

Post subject:  Why not blow-thru carb?

I run a blow thru Demon carb. Works really well after dialing it in. Don't people get more easy HP and drivability out of a blow-thru than a draw-thru?

v8 H8r, Where were those pictures taken? The car with the 4-71 blower, looks like Roberts car. Are you from Florida? Will you have your car at the "Turkey Run"? Would like to see your car in person. I will have my 66 Cuda there on Fri and Sat. Will be parked with the Inliners club. Is the turbo car next to the Ford Wgn, also a slant six?

The photos were taken at the street rod nationals in Tampa this year.

I believe we met last year at the Turkey Run. I'm Robert's son, David. Kinda funny how things run in the family. I unfortunately will not have it at the show this year. If I do come at all it will be with the 56 chevy I had there last year.

The car next to the wagon is a well built turobed "Iron Duke" 4 cylinder boat motor.
