Post subject:  New wiring harness?
After a 5 years of my car sitting in the garage I got a motor in it and then I had no fuel to the carb. Replaced the fuel pump and now the cab leaks fuel all over. So I am waiting till Monday to get to my new carb so I figured I would clean the engine bay up from 5 years of dust with the hood off and found lots of cracked and shorted wiring.

All of the wiring insulation on the passenger side of the engine is cracked and brittle. I need to replace just about every wire in the engine wiring harness. Its a 64 valiant with 225 and points ignition. The wiring running along the firewall is good but right after it turns and runs forward on the engine its bad so I guess I may just splice in new up to the firewall. Is there a company out there that makes a new wiring harness just for the engine side?

Are You Handy Department:

Check RonFrancis.com for correct brass connectors, etc, or NAPA and build your own harness one conductor at a time following the FM colors & wire gage requirements. Black plastic harness wrap is also available to finish the job.

You may have to purchase a crimp tool if your box of tricks lacks one in order to properly make up your harness.

My car need about 40% of its wiring replaced, dash & engine compartment. None of my gages, interior lights, heater, brake lights, back up lights, 4ways, electric choke, and radio worked. I took my time, one wire at a time, changed out all of the corroded connectors and all bad conductors found, this included the 100% of the bulkhead connector, and the connections behind the kick panels. The car has not given any electrical problems since.

Engine compartment harnesses don't come in left & right sections, and are way over priced for my piker pocket book.

Overpriced from some sources, to be sure. But you can get a very good new complete engine wiring harness from Evans Wiring for $90. They don't list a '64 Valiant slant-6 harness, but they gladly duplicate whatever Mopar engine harness a customer will send in, and they will even provide popular options on request (electronic ignition with module on fenderwell or with module on firewall, '70-up alternator with electronic regulator, etc.).

Hope you were able to find a source for a good carburetor...the "remanufactured" ones from parts stores are junk :-(

Just an up date. I decided to just repair the wires that where bad. So I went to the local ACE Hardware and got all the wiring not all the colors ended up being the same but they are very close to the wires that where removed. I was even able to find the correct spade type connectors that push in to the plastic bulkhead fitting. So all together I replace the oil sending unit wire, coolant sending unit wire, Alt. field wire and, coil/ballast resistor wire. I heat shrinked all the ends of the connectors and then wrapped it all up in split-loom. It looks way better then the rats nest it was before and took 4 hours and only cost $45. I did not get a chance to check if its all hooked up because the battery has been sitting for 5 years and only had 10volts not enough to crank the engine over so its on the battery charger for now. Thanks for every ones replys and help.

I'll second SSDan's recommendation for a Evans harness. They've done one for my 65GT and one for a 66 Barracuda for me. Nice to have new and looking original at the same time. Well worth the money.
