Post subject: this is kinda weird
PostPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2002 9:37 pm
ok i was driving my 66 dart and i felt this shudder and then the next thing i know i cant see out the windows cause the cab was filled with smoke, so all i opened up all the vents and windows so i could see....all 4 lanes behind me filled with smoke, i stopped and checked, open her hood up and the overflow tank was boiling and there was oil spewing out of the fill/breather cap all over the engine. there was no smoke coming out of the tail pipe just out of the filler cap, now i dont know what the hell is going on, i pulled the distrib. cap and the rotor could be spun by hand so i changed the gear at the bottom of it and it still wont fire, (it was at tdc when i put the distrib. back in) its almost like it lost all compression, but why?
PLEASE HELP!! thanks
MIKE

Mike,

In a word, broke. Sorry to hear about your engine.
If it were mine, I'd start by pulling the valve cover, and then work my way down. Check to see if your valve train is still intact and functional. Pull the coil lead and crank it just to see if everything under the valve cover is working. You may have just broken a timing chain.

Pull the plugs. If you've broken a piston or rod, you may see a pounded spark plug. Next I'd check the oil for antifreeze. You'll see brown shaving cream in your valve cover if there's antifreeze in the oil.

Good hunting. Let us know what you find,

Gilly

Yep, I'd guess a broken rod.

Change the oil filter, but don't toss the old one. You might want to open the old bugger up and check what's in the filter. Metal shavings, bits, pieces, chunks, etc. It's a cheap way to get a glance into what went wrong without stopping to pull the pan and check for chunks.
