Will the small starter from a 1997 Dakota six cylinder work ok on the slant? Seem like I remember someone telling me that is a good way to get a smaller starter so the headers will fit better.

Yes, I'm using one to save weight, reduce current draw and give faster cranking.

Most anything and everything that takes the standard Chrysler made gear reduction starter can use the Denso mini starter. Make sure you get one that has a nose cone that fits into the pocket in the bellhousing.

If you have a direct drive starter you're stuck with that starter.

For the time being, you're stuck with the direct drive starter. In any case the mini starter you can take off a Dodge pickup or van will not help those of you with direct drive starters.

Stuck. :( When I sold my '71, I needed to save the special starter off it. I thought I'd have time to go out to my storage lockup and get a spare "any ol'" starter to swap on, but all the sudden a buyer materialised and said he'd be over in 45 minutes. The only starter I had ready access to was also the only mini starter I have at the moment. If you have a mini starter and access to a good starter-alternator builder, I can send you the drive pinion you need and your guy can install it for you; send me a PM.

If one were to replace a '61 torque convertor and flex plate with those same components from say a '63 slant six would that allow the use of a Bendix style starter?

The '61 already has a Bendix-drive starter. I think you're asking how you can use the '62-up gear-reduction starter. You would swap in a '62-'67 torque converter (direct swap) and add a starter relay, wired up in accord with any '63-up wiring diagram. You'd then need the starter and the correct starter-to-bellhousing mount "seal" plate.

Dan, sounds like all parts are pretty easy to score except the seal plate......? Would I have to salvage yard one up.......?

Shouldn't be hard to find the seal plate; any '62-'87 RWD Mopar will have it. Use one from an automatic trans. If you can't find a used one, you can still get it new from Chrysler, p/n 2892 915. Interestingly, it appears the seal plate was dropped in '88 with the introduction of the Nippondenso starter. I've always used it when retrofitting the later starter to an earlier car.

So because I have 2 vintages of slant ('63 valiant, column shift, and '70 Dart, 904 auto), and because I'm obviously daft and easily confused...

Can I use the small starter on either of my cars if I so choose, without modification?

How do I tell what type of starter is on my slant or more to the point, how do I tell what type of starters it will accept?

I know its a high mount and nothing else.
