I've got a Carter BBD (#8173 I think) that I want to rebuild, due to stalling at curb idle. I had the dust cover off, and noticed that the little green plastic thing on the pump shaft (called a "arm - metering rod" on my exploded diagram) has a tab broken off. Needless to say, it is not in my rebuild kit. How can I source one of these things? The parts guy who sold me the kit said he couldn't come up with a separate part #. I am travelling up to San Fran in the next few days, and would love some suggestions. Also, any suggestions, besides carb rebuild, on what to do with a two barrel carter that won't curb idle. I checked the vacuum lines, and it seemed to run worse without them. I checked the fuel filters and pump, and it seems to be getting enough. Also, if I partially cover the throat with my fingers it will settle down and idle. Otherwise it bogs down and dies. Anything I'm forgetting? zac PS The starter problem was a bad "new" solenoid. zac_smith@hotmail.com |

I got the number by cross referencing a Holly Rebuild Number sticker that was on the carb. The number on the carb body itself is 2681-0, but the kit they had for THAT number was wrong: for a 1-barrel. This carb does look like it has some emission stuff on it, some tubes that are capped and one that isn't: a 5/8" or so nipple INLET into the pump lever/stepdown well. It has a cap with a spring on it, which seems to get pushed OPEN at very full throttle. I don't know what to do with this part. There is also a nipple coming off the exhaust manifold right before the pipe fitting with nothing on it. It belches exhaust when I'm running, and since this is in a Cortez, it's belching into my house (when I'm working on it). Can I just plug that hole? Maybe I should put a hose from there going into my mystery carb nipple ![]() Thanks for help. zac Quote:

I have rebuilt the carb. The main problem was the check arm being broken off. The throttle plates do not have holes. Now I have more problems. It seems not to be pumping. Before the rebuild it would spray into the throat when I pressed the throttle. Also, when I have it apart it pumps if I fill the bowl. But it doesn't with it on the motor. Check valve ball? Float level? ??? The other thing is a drip from one side. It drips pretty much the whole time it is running, but only on one barrel. Is this a jet problem? A float problem? ??? Thanks in advance. zac zac_smith@hotmail.com |
