I was just wondering if it would be possible to take an air pump (pollution crap) and run the hose into the air cleaner. Would this unit be able to push enough air to actually accomplish anything? or would it be a total waste of time?

Yah, what Dan said. The smog pump has so small a displacement and turns so slowly that it makes no difference.

That's not exactly true. It would make a great restrictor in the intake air sytem and really choke your engine.

Don't feel bad I had grandiose ideas of filling an aux. air-tank with compressed air and plumbing it to the carb/intake via a solenoid valve for quick blasts on short runs...

I know off-road guys often turn A/C compressors into engine driven air compressors. You could mount an A/C comrpessor and a compressed air tank in the trunk and achieve you momentary spercharger effect.

However, it would be hellish to get your carb to tune for this situation, so I don't recommend it.

Maybe if you could salvage some parts out of an industrial air compressor. Some of these contain screw blowers that might work for this.

I have a 1958 Hot Rod mag that has a dragster with a supercharger mounted in the back powered by a 2 stroke outboard motor, its a 40hp motor. Hows that for an air pump, and no drag on the engine ( flathead I think)

Smog pumps have been use to evacuate and pull a vacuum on the crankcase, which helps windage and promotes better ring sealing.

H'mmm...how would that be accomplished? The output of the smog pump is ducted (hose fitting) but the input on most of them (including all Mopar, Ford, and GM pumps I'm aware of) is through the fan on the back of the drive pulley. The fan serves as a centrifugal "flinger" to exclude dust and spiders from the pump, like the rotating screen through which lawnmower engines used to draw their cooling air. Some early smog pumps used on International-Harvester trucks did have a ducted (hose fitting) inlet, and I suppose one of those would work, but is that what's really going on...people digging up particular smog pumps with ducted inlets? Tell us more!
