Dan,

I remember once you wrote about some experience you had as a lighting pro. Well your recent mention of the F15T8-BLB jogged my memory. I put in some UV leak detect and ran it a while, then used a UV light I got at Lowe's and it was too bulky to fit in most places and light them well. The bulb itself is the diameter of a typical flourescent bulb and about a foot long.

(1) Don't "blacklight" bulbs function by ionizing just like flourescent?

(2) And if yes, can I make up a simple frame with one of the no ballast shop lamp guts (little PC board and sockets for lamp) to trigger my bulb? I can make sumpin much smaller than the framed light I have now. I fon't have a flourescent type hand light is why I ask.

Yes, the F15T8 (and all other fluorescent UV "blacklight blue" bulbs that look dark purple when off and bright purple when on) are just ordinary fluorescent tubes with different glass coatings, so ordinary ballasts work, but really, you're reinventing the wheel here...go get yourself a Christmas present, buy a fluoro droplight. They are way, way, way, far better than the old bulb-type droplights, and they don't cost a lot.

If for whatever reason you don't want to buy a tubular fluoro droplight, then get a bulb like this one for your regular droplight. It won't work as well, but it will work.
