If I put a cold air hose to my carb wont the cooler air cool down the thermostat valve for the hot air tube enough to close it and block my cold air letting in only hot air? Or am I missing how the hot air tube works?

The cold air hose goes from in front of the radiator into the stock air cleaner snout. Supplying nice cool air.

the vacuum lines that control the air damper work through a thermostatic vacuum switch screwed into a coolant passage. When engine is cold, vacuum is applied to the diaphragm and the damper closes allowing warm air from the manifold to be drawn into the air cleaner. when the engine warms up, the damper opens, (no vacuum to it) and allows cool air to be drawn in. It does not work off of air temp, it works off of coolant temp.

The thermostat on the '74 is built is in the air cleaner, it picks up the air as it flows by.

Not correct. The thermostatic air cleaner temp sensor on every Mopar so equipped is actually an air temp sensor, and it is located in the air cleaner housing base itself.

The thermostatic air cleaner monitors the temperature of the air inside the air cleaner housing that is just about to flow into the carburetor. Run your cold air intake hose from wherever you decide to pick up the cold air to the end of the air cleaner snorkel, and leave the thermostatic part intact.

Wouldnt the cold air be enough to open up the warm air intake when at highway speeds? What is the temp that it opens & closes at?

Also how can you check if the system is operating properly?

Varies by year and application; around 80°F.
Start the car from cold and see if the damper door is in the "hot air" position. Drive around awhile in something other than freezing cold weather, let the engine get fully warmed up, pull over, leave the engine idling and see if the damper is in the "cold air" position.

I think mine is not working, stays in open (cold air ) position. Is the thermostat device still available?

They have dried up from the general supply chain, but I have some new ones; send me a PM. Do make sure your vacuum hoses are all connected correctly (full-time manifold vacuum from the port at the base of the carb to one side of the thermo sensor, then a hose from the other side to the snorkel actuator). Also try applying vacuum directly to the snorkel actuator to make sure it actually lifts the damper and the damper stays lifted/no vacuum leak.

Do you still have some of the thermo sensors available? Is there a way to check the sensor with the air cleaner off the car? I just bought a S6 aircleaner off ebay, but have no idea if that sensor is good. Also is the tube from the exhaust heat stove to the air cleaner available somewhere? I'm slowly getting all the parts I need to switch over to the super six setup on my truck.

I do still have sensors, send me a PM. The flex duct from the heat stove to the air cleaner is readily available locally.

The Heated Air Inlet System also has NO detrimental effect on maximum power because it is operated by manifold vacuum. When manifold vacuum drops to about 5 - 5.5" Hg, the air control valve should drop to the full cold position regardless of air temperature.

Incidentally, there is nothing to gain performance-wise by disabling this system. Replacing the thermostatically-controlled air cleaner with an open-element air cleaner can potentially gain a few hp at a cost of poorer cool weather operation and overall fuel economy.
