| Post subject: | L.A. area /6 engine rebuilder |
Does anyone know of a reputable place in the greater L.A. area to have a /6 rebuilt? My little sister has a '66 Valiant wagon and it has been losing coolant for the past few months...(likely just a head or gasket leak, there are combustion products in the coolant, but just want to make a good daily driver for her) We recently swapped out her old tired engine (a post '68 engine and trans combo) for the /6 and tranny out of my old '66 valiant sedan. (she just had her tranny rebuilt, too) I bought all the stuff to supersix my old engine and installed and tuned it on my old car and then swapped everything over to hers (tried to do just the engine, but then learned about the different TC and pilot bushing issue, half day swap took 3 days to complete) Anyway, right away she noticed she was losing coolant, but it has become more of a problem lately. We are looking into rebuilding her old engine(the post '68 one that was in her car) and we are looking for a reputable engine builder and shop to do the work. I would just have the engine rebuilt and install it myself, but she is afraid of another ordeal like last time(didn't get her car back for 4 or 5 days..plus the car didnt run perfect right away, we had to mess with the timing and fuel/air mix quite a bit, but compared to her old engine it was literally night and day, I coulnt even get the forker to start! she had some special technique to get it to fire). I also don't have the time to get up there to do it anyway (Navy stationed in S.D.) Anyway any and all pointers are appreciated! Thanks in advance, Josh I am also wondering about swapping in the newer hydraulic valvetrain & lifter assembly so itll be a less maintenance for her... any thoughts or concerns about doing this? |

Don't know how much you want to spend, but you could try a remanufactured engine place (like http://www.jasperengines.com) or simular. You can use a later hydraulic lifter engine, just use the later transmission (you already knew that). The motor mounts for your sisters car will work with it...a friend and I just put an '83 hydro engine in my Satellite. |

My parents live in Gardena (that's where the 'donor' engine is)My sister lives in the West L.A./SaMo area... She's looking at taking it to a shop near her house, as she's seen a bunch of classics in their lot, but I want to know if anyone has actually used a good rebuilder/Mopar friendly shop in the area. She did have a good mechanic (actually went by Mopar Mark) but he moved out of state, Texas IIRC. |

I have used West LA engine rebuilders and they did a good job at a good price. They seem to prefer to rebuild your core, which is usually best. They will do some extra things like different cams if you want that. For a "normal" rebuilder they are the one I would use in LA county. They will pick up and deliver the engine (or car) for free from most of the LA area. There used to be another good rebuilder in Glendale that I used but they sold out to a larger operation and now the service and quality suck. If you are looking for a real race shop that does the best work available and will still work on a street engine for a fair price, Burbank Speed and Machine can do whatever you want and do it right. Dave has done all the machine work on all of my high performance engines for over twenty years. They take the time to do the details right. They are usually very busy and it may take awhile. |

Thanks for the info guys! I will def. give a few of those places a call. As far as the actual swap over goes, does anyone know of an honest shop to do the install? She is really touchy about who works on her car, it kind of pisses me off, but she seems hell bent on spending the money to have a shop do the install as well. To me, this is an easy swap and should take no more than a day, but like I said in the initial post, she is worried about not getting her car back right away, and/or it needing a little fine tuning to get it perfect. I really dont have the time for it anyway (i have my own projects to attend to during my next few trips up there) so itll prolly work out better this way anyway. Anyway, thanks again! josh |

It's been my experience that when you're under time constraints, things go wrong........... And conversely when you're not, things go smoother (and often faster)......... |

I completely agree... I have a twin-turbo engine for my Stealth that has been sitting on a stand for almost 2 years now... Each time I get up there, I have grand plans of finally getting it under the hood so I can start the plumbing and wiring, but each time I run into another problem (like busted exhaust studs, not being able to find the kevlar timing belt...parents house ate that one I think, misplacing a couple of labeled bags of fasteners, etc.) Anyway, my next couple of trips are going to be focused on getting my car tip top so I have one less thing to worry about, then I can finally get back around to fixing the Stealth/3000GT(engine from stealth which got totaled while it was parked, so I rebuilt it and now its going into a 3000GT). |

they will do the whole thing. You can talk to them about things like new motor mounts, water and fuel pump, belts etc. I am pretty sure they want to do all that as a package. |
