Post subject:  New Tires, What Kind?
I am thinking about getting new tires for my car. The rears have good tread on them, but are going on 8 years old. What brand should I get? I really want The BFGoodrich Radial T/As, but they are in the upper section of my price range. Is there a good tire for cheaper? The raised white lettering is a must for me, Thats one of the reasons why I want the T/As.

Im thinking about 215-70/14s in the rear, and 205-70/14s in the front. I would like to go 195-70/14 or somthing like that in the front, but nobody sells the T/As in less than 205s.

My tires are currently 205-75/14 in the front, and 195-75/14s in the rear. The fronts scrape way too much, thats why I want to go smaller.

Suggestions much appreciated! :D

I run P215 60R-14's in the front and P225 60R-14's in the rear which gives very good handling and a nice rake to the car. I had Les Schwab order them for me so I get the free service. I put on allot of miles so it's nice to have the service.

There is no rubbing/scrapping or bottoming out with these tires and they handle very, very nice on the twisty back roads.

I watched many cars race at the MOPAR Drags this year with the new BF Goodrich T/A Radials. That is what cinched the deal for me. Many, many 12 and 13 second Darts. My buddies SL6 Valiant turned a 14.01 with a Holley 600 double pumper and Clifford intake, headers and a .525 lift cam and some big valves! :D

BFG Radial T/A tires are very old tech. There are many better choices available. Do not confuse the use of BFG drag radials which do a fair job at their intended purpose of straight line acceleration with the old T/As. They do not use the same compound or construction.

If the Duster were mine and I wanted some rake I'd probably do 205/60R15 front and 225 or 235/60R15 in the back. The selection in 225/60R15 is much better than 235, BTW.

The Yokohama Avid T4 comes in 205 and 225/60R15 and is better than the BFG T/A. Same for the Kumho Ecsta ASX and the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport.

I put a set of Yokohama's on the Hpak duster and it grabs pavement very well... to the point that a 6000 rpm clutch dump no longer causes scratch it just grabs and goes.... the 205/70R14 is about as wide as I want to go on a stock 14" rallye.

Well, I only have 14x6s on my car, so the R15s wouldn't work. Whats the widest I could go? And whats the difference of /60R14 /65R14 /70R14 and so on?

I run my tires on 14 x 7" rims. No scrapes or rubbing with BF Goodrich T/A radials P215's or P225's.

By the way when Les Schwab ordered them for me they came from Michlen.
The casing are much stiffer and better built than the Good Year Grand Am's I was running.

That is the "height" of the sidewall,in %
Say...if you had a 200/50R14(just to get an easy number), the sidewall would be 100mm, or 50% of the width...
The width and profile numbers are metric, and the rim size(14") is in inches for some reason
The R means radial, btw...

The technical term is aspect ratio. It is indeed the percentage of sidewall height in relation to the section width as Rust mentioned.

To get the diameter of a tire (say 205/60R15) you take the section width 205mm X .60 X 2 (two sidewalls top and bottom) / 25.4 (# of millimeters per inch) + the wheel diameter = 24.685 or 24.7"

235/60R15... (235 X .6 X 2 / 25.4) + 15= 26.10"
205/75R14... (205 X .75 X 2 / 25.4) + 14= 26.10"
