Hi all; I'm in the process of slowly rebuilding my 904 off the 65 valiant. Everythings moving along nicely - lots of dirt and metal particles, but nothing so far looks worn too much or broken. I'm to the point now where I have to take the front oil pump cover off. I'm using the original shop manual which tells you to use a couple of long bolts and some weights to knock the cover out into the bell housing. Only problem is that it isn't working. Granted, I made my own special tool out of some long bolts and some 1.25 inch sockets, but they don't seem to be doing the job. The cover hasn't moved a hundreth of an inch, far as I can tell - with copious amounts of banging and swearing on my part. So, is there an easier way to do this? I thought of a slide hammer (have to go buy one), but would that be too much force? Looking for some help, anything would be appreciated. Thanks. peragro@yahoo.com |

Yep, I use a slide hammer with a special adaptor to screw into the two specially threaded holes. Take a close look at all the bolt holes, only 2 have larger threads (3/8-16 unc) in the pump body, this is what your "puller" has to grab onto. The only other way to get the pump out is to remove the valve body and use a long rod or bar to "bash" it out from behind. You place the rod on the back of the pump housing and strike it with a hammer. This is not the preferred method because it is hard to keep the pump housing from getting cocked and jammed, you can also put dents into the housing but this is a way to "break loose" a pump that is really stuck. Your 1.25" sockets are not heavy enough. You need bigger weights (aka: slide hammer) Also when I worked on one of my transmissions some years ago I noticed the pump assy was much tighter in the aluminum case in a cold shop as compared to a warm shop. This is because the aluminum shrinks around the cast iron pump housing and holds it tight. Perhaps puting a heat lamp on the aluminum case for a while may help expand it and loosen its grip on the pump housing. Just my 2¢ worth. cfield@ll.net |

This is : not the preferred method because it is hard : to keep the pump housing from getting cocked : and jammed, you can also put dents into the : housing but this is a way to "break : loose" a pump that is really stuck. : DD Cave Man Style: take two tailshaft bolts, thread them in the two pump bolts that have thread "behind" the threads. carefull not to go too far, or you can damage the threads in the case for the pump bolts. use a small claw hammer, or similar tool, turn hammer on its "side" between case and bolt in pump, gentle apply pressure to the handle, and the pump will move. work each of the two bolts evenly, and walk the pump out. piece of cake. chad beardliz@msn.com |
