Post subject:  Knock when cold outside...

A couple of times when i've started my car when it's cold outside, i've noticed a knock coming from what sounds like the harmonic balancer (which I've noticed wiggling around before so I plan on replacing it soon). The knock stops when the car warms up, and it only seems to do it when it's cold outside (really cold, as in snow on the ground). Is it likely just my harmonic balancer needs replacing or does this sound like a dreaded rod knocking?

Thanks,
Robert.

Robert i had this same problem on a 360 engine 72 dart that i restored. The problem came up with about 5000 miles on the engine which was totaly rebuilt no cost spared. the engine made 400 hp. My problem sounded just like a knock but turned out to be lose tourque converter bolts might try checking the bolts. thanks Ron

Here is a test to try:
On a cold day when you first hear the noise, stop the engine and quickly remove all the accessory fan belts.
Restart the engine to see if the noise is still there. (don't run the engine for long)
I have isolated noisy alternators, water and power steering pumps with this simple test.
