: which I've been told is Carter numbers 8173
: or 8174, which I've been told is from a late
: 70's Californial Diplomat 318. A metering
: rod lobe broke off, and I pulled one from a
: 318 van carb. The lobes were smaller, and it
: allowed the metering rod assembly to sit up
: higher than the "original" (the
: one in the carb) when adjusted per sheet
: instructions, so I have pushed it down to
: keep the metering rods lower at idle.

: The Choke assembly works, in that the choke is
: fully closed when cold, and opens as the
: motor warms. However, it won't start with
: the choke closed.

: Is there another problem on the carb? Too much
: gas at start? Should I look at the choke as
: the problem and adjust or replace with
: electric or manual? Is it related to where
: the metering rods are sitting: should I
: allow them to sit up instead of holding them
: down?

: Sounds like a leaking needle seat or inturnal
: carb. leak. Does it drip gas into the
: manifold after shut-off?
