I've got a Carter BBD (yes, I'm still messing with it) that I'm having cold start problems with. It will start with the cam on fast idle and the choke manually held open. Hot starts are usually fine.

The carb has a Holley rebuild number 64-1590 which I've been told is Carter numbers 8173 or 8174, which I've been told is from a late 70's Californial Diplomat 318. A metering rod lobe broke off, and I pulled one from a 318 van carb. The lobes were smaller, and it allowed the metering rod assembly to sit up higher than the "original" (the one in the carb) when adjusted per sheet instructions, so I have pushed it down to keep the metering rods lower at idle.

The Choke assembly works, in that the choke is fully closed when cold, and opens as the motor warms. However, it won't start with the choke closed.

Is there another problem on the carb? Too much gas at start? Should I look at the choke as the problem and adjust or replace with electric or manual? Is it related to where the metering rods are sitting: should I allow them to sit up instead of holding them down?

Sounds like a leaking needle seat or inturnal carb. leak. Does it drip gas into the manifold after shut-off?

I noticed a drip from one of the venturi tips earlier, but it "stopped" since the last time I've had it apart. Perhaps I just haven't noticed it.

Should I a) check the gap on the needle plunger setup? b) try new gaskets? c) try different needles? d) something else?
