Post subject:  Rocker arm clearance

1982 Dodge truck, slant 6, 4 speed manual, 2bbl carb.
Quick question, there should be some clearance between the rocker arms and end of the valve stems, correct? I can't seem to get a feeler gauge in there and none of the rocker arms will even wiggle the tiniest bit by hand. If I'm reading my factory service manual correctly, I should be able to get at least an 0.060" gauge in there and I can't.
If I am reading this all correctly, how do I go about fixing it? Shims under the rocker arm shaft? Grind down the valve stems? Thicker head gasket? New push rods?
Thanks,
John

If it is the original motor, it should not need adjustment because it is a hydro motor.

It is the original motor as far as I know. Had it rebuilt a while back - short block only to help save some cash. I know there's no adjustments in the rockers, just thought there should be some clearance there.

Hyd lifters are 0 lash so unless someting is wrong shouldn't be any gap.Thats all subject to change with deck'd block, shaved head, bum lifters etc.

Which is exactly why shaving the head/block is a pain for those with the hydro setup. If the lifters aren't allowed the right amount of movement, say good bye to some internals.

OK. Thanks for the info. My FSM is NOT really clear about that.

Now to figure out why I have to set my ignition timing at around 25 BTC to get it to run. The guy who rebuild and assembled short block might not have degreed the cam properly. I dunno. I guess I'll have to take the truck to him and see what he thinks. Right now only getting around 12-13 mpg out of it and I know it should do better.

25 BTDC? Sounds like he didn't even connect the dots let alone degree the cam  Man thats a wack load of B4s,you sure on that?

That's what I thought, although the engine seems to run OK, just uses a lot more gas than I think it should. Heck, I know I can get way better MPG with a 318/727 combo as I got better than that with a 4WD Ramcharger.
I've got one of those timing lights with the adjustable timing and I have to crank it around to 22-25 BTC to get the timing marks to line up.
Could the marks on the crank pulley be that far off?
