Post subject:  Replacing The Top On My Signet 200

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has advice on replacing my convertible top on my '63 valiant. there is no motor (don't know where it is, probably gone years ago). the back is ripped up and it looks like a top is about $250 on line. what else do i need for replacement? also, the shop manual is pretty limited on info, is there any advice anyone could give me about doing this? is it a major pain in the ass or is it pretty doable? can i do it alone? should i even bother? I would apprecitate any advice. my email is jjohnroody@yahoo.com Thanks very much and happy new year. John.

I replaced the top on a 65 Coronet and didn't have any problems (other than repairing the fron header which was rusted on in one spot. The 65 FSM gives a step by step procedure with photos. If there's a top switch on your dash, then you'd have a power top. Chances are it's a manual top.

It's not a difficult job if you take your time and use the old top to compare.

If you have a power top, the motor is mounted in the trunk on top of the axle hump, and you would also have hydraulic pistons visible on the sides when the top is up.

Besides the top, you need new tack strips on the rear bow and on the rear deck. You will also want a new well liner that you can buy, or have made. You also need a good upholstery adhesive.

Pick up a copy of the latest Mopar Muscle for a good article on top replacement. They used a second generation Barracuda, but your '63 is very similar.

Great. thanks for that, i really appreciate it. I will p/u the magazine also. It generally seems that not too many things are that difficult on this car. (knock on wood). Cheers. John.
