What do you mean by "putting out too much"? What's burning/failing? Sounds like a voltage regulation problem. |

Ditto what Dan said. What "stuff" is "blowing"? Fuses? Fusible links? Batteries? Starter motors? Bulbs? 50 amps is a fairly low rating by todays standards, so if you are blowing fuses or having components fail it is likely due to a short somewhere. but if the alternator is truly putting out enough amperage to overload components then you need to check/replace the voltage regulator and/or the alternator. |

you could have 500 amps at your disposal and the circuit/device will only consume as much current as can pass through it. however, bump the potential up to 17 volts or higher and things will definitely start to cook. you can test full-field current output by full fielding the alternator and hooking an amp clamp up to the output wire, i dont see how a 50 amp alternator can malfunction to put out more than 50. it can put out low current, though. if stuff is blowing besides your battery, i second the guess at an overvoltage problem caused by a faulty or improperly grounded voltage regulator, or regulator wiring. |
