So, it's been a few hours since I asked a dumb question. Here's another one. I've got a transmission that's leaking like a sieve when I pour fluid into it. I can watch about half of what I pour seep out below filler on the right side of the transmission. It's been about ten years since I've had the transmission serviced, and it's definitely due for a gasket change or two. I looked up the parts on Rock Auto and the only gasket they had for my car was this one: FEL-PRO Part # TOS18583 {Automatic Transmission Gasket} 14-bolt holes; Chrysler A727 3 Spd. Automatic Transmission I'm pretty sure "A727" means it's not for a 904 unless... (here's the dumb question) Did they use the same gasket? Napa is coming up with nothing, as is autozone. I know the cable shift 904s were different than the later models. Would one of their gaskets work? Thanks for any help you can offer. ETA: Or, I guess I could just buy this off eBay. |

The 904 vs 727 have different pan gaskets. The filter kit you want should be listed as 64-65, 904 Torqueflite and it should contain a filter with 2 oil feed holes. An FYI... I recently used a 66 and up 904 filter kit on a 64 and had to add the second (rear pump) oil feed hole to the filter. I matched the holes location to the old filter, poked-into the fiber filter skin and found that the cut-out for the second hole was already in the filter's metal subframe. I snipped away the skin with small scissors, following the edge of the under-laying subframe hole... it took about a minute to do the modification. One other thought, check to see if your leak is from the o-ring on the dipstick tube, that is the other "leak point" on the passenger side of a 904. DD |

Thanks, Doug. It's entirely possible that it was the dipstick tube given the location it seemed to be coming from. I'll check that out as well. |

Dipstick tube is likely culprit. You can either get an o-ring, or just pull it and goop it with permatex, which is what I always do. Lou |

Dipstick is probably the culprit given the location of the leak. See this post for info on gasket and filter selection. |
