Post subject:  Oil Pan for 63 Valiant 225

I need to install a new oil pan for my 63 Valiant's 225.

I picked up a pan and pickup tube at a swap meet.

Recently I realized that not all /6 oil pans are the same. The pan I bought is stamped with the number 987.

I have the pan painted. I have the oil pan gasket set. I thought I was ready to go.

Will this work? Do I need to replace anything else?

Does anyone have any tips on removing the pan while the engine is in the car?

While I'm doing this, should I go ahead and do anything else since I'm already there?

Thanks for any help.

Sorry to say that the "987" pan is one of the pans for the 67 and later A-Body cars, this pan will not fit 60-66 A-Body chassis.

As for other things to check or do when the pan is off, a new set of con rod bearings is good "insurance". Also clean-out your oil pick-up tube completly.
If it were me, I would pull the engine to do this swap because dropping all the steering linkage to get the pan off is a real pain. Then you have to deal with getting the 4 part oil pan gasket to align correctly, with oil dripping on you the whole time. It can be done but it is no fun.

Here is a look at the pan you have next to the one you need. The early A-Body pan has a much longer front section.
FYI, the only other pan that will fit is the "369", mid 70s A & F body unit, the blue one in this pic. The front left corner of that pan comes close to the 60-66 K-frame so I dent it in a little to make clearance. (see the black lines)

What is the number on the bottom of the early A-body pan? Thanks, Darrin

There is no number stamped into the early A-Body oil pans. You just have to look for the long shallow front section, the sump does not start until appx the 3rd bolt hole back.

So for a 62 Lancer, should I be looking for the red one (top left) or the burgandy one (top right)? Are the pick-ups any different or caon they be interchanged? Thanks! Darrin
