I had to pull the radiator yesterday to resolder it and when I took the transmissions lines off some of the fluid leaked out. So after I got the radiator back in I put about 4/10th of a quart back in and checked the dipstick (with engine running) and it was at the correct level. I used Dexron III as well.

Now when I'm driving it slips and sometimes even acts like it's halfway in gear and halfway in neutral. Whats the deal?

Have you checked it again after it's been driven?

Yeah and its at the correct level. Could it be that I mixed Dex III with something different that was already in there? I don't think I've touched the fluid since I got it. I'll change out the fluid and filter tomorrow and hopefully that does it. Any other ideas?

Restricted trans fluid cooler or line? Probably not contaminated fluid unless there's leakage of coolant into the trans fluid via the cooler. How long since basic service (complete fluid change, filter, band and linkage adjustment)?

Dexron III is backwards compatible with Dexron II and plain old Dexron so that definitely was not "it". If you have not touched it since you got it I would definitely pull the pan and replace the filter at a minimum.

It's been about 20,000 since I changed fluid. The strange thing is that I took it for another run and it seems ok now. I think its my shifter. I had to put it more towards 2nd than D and it seemed to work fine. Heres the deal with that. A few years ago some A Hole tried stealing my car. After that the little indicator that points toward whatever gear you're in sat just a little bit to the right of the D. Then a few months ago I had to pull my gauge cluster a few times. To get it out I had to drop the shifter all the way down to 1st gear for clearance to pull the cluster out. After that, the shifter stopped wanting to pop back into place after shifting. For instance if I went from Park to Drive, I'd pull the shifter toward me a little bit, drop it down to D and let it go. At that point it would be pointing toward drive but it would be in Neutral until I wiggled the shifter and pushed it back toward the dash to lock it in place. Then it would be in gear.

It would never just run halfway in gear and miss it's shifts though, it was either Neutral or in gear, there was no in between. What do you guys think is up and do you know how I could fix it? Thanks

I KNOW what's wrong; that car needs a Hurst shifter thru the floor and a 3rd pedal!

Well I changed the fluid and now it works fine. Strange cause I know I had enough fluid in there the first time. Maybe some air got in there? Oh well at least it's fixed. Still don't know whats up with the shifter though.

You can adjust the shifter right off the trans on the rod that goes down there. I adjust them so that it pulls snugly on the rod going to the shift lever on the trans on Park. Then when you shift down into any gear, the pointer should be in the right spot, along with the shift valve in the valve body.

I've had to adjust every one that I've dropped the column on, even if they worked just fine before.
