| Post subject: | Plastic headlamp lens restoration? |
Dan......finally decided I really need to upgrade the headlights in the daily. '95 Dakota with the composite lenses. I may find a yard set and polish them up pretty. Is there a UV-resistant coating that I can spray on them to fight the hazing problem? Also, what lamps would you recommend? Roger |

Almost a complete waste of effort in this case - even in brand-new condition, these aero lamps are junk, and you'd be much better off grabbing the sealed-beam setup from a '91-'96 Dakota so equipped and swapping that in with a set of thoughtfully-selected good headlamps replacing the sealed beams. End result will look like this. If you are bound and determined to keep the aero junk, the one and only headlamp polish + UV-protect kit worth messing with is this one, and the least-awful 9004 bulbs presently on the market are the GE Night Hawk 9004NH, which you can get on permanent sale from www.amazon.com (enter 9004NH into the search box). Avoid Sylvania Silverstar/Ultra, Wagner TruView, PIAA, Hoen, and all other brands of blue-glass "extra white" or "xenon matching" bulbs. They are a scam; despite the advertising hype, they significantly reduce headlamp performance rather than increasing it. And whether you keep the bad headlights or put in good ones, you will definitely want to put in decent wiring and relays since the stock wiring badly starves whatever headlamps you install. |

The only thing that sucks about that change is that those parts are getting harder to come across. I haven't seen a sealed-beam headlamp setup on a Dakota pickup for a long time. The lenses on my '95 were sparkly new when I got the truck, and with the bulbs Dan perscribed, they work pretty well. I favor the look of the Aero lenses personally, looks over function, which can be applied to one of the reasons we are all here anyways, but Dan is right. Polishing those lenses is a temporary fix, and you will have to clean them again and again. Just my .02 ~THOR~ |

I was afraid of that. That lens kit has a decent price, though. Food for thought.....I know of one or two sealed-beam Dakotas in a yard fairly close. Thanks much.....Roger |
