hey guys, I just got a nice running slant out of a 71 dodge pickup, I picked up some lead additive for it, but when I pulled the motor, I noticed it didn't have spark plug tubes. On the block, passenger side, it has "7225R 9 24 2E" Is this a 77 eng.? How can I ID the head also?

Yep, that's a '77 engine. But even if it had been a '71, you don't need to run lead substitute (and shouldn't).

The head should have a casting number of 3698447. This number appeared on heads made in 75 though 78. Of course 77 was the new peanut head. 79 -80 would be 4104362. 81-83 would be 4095778. Have a good one!

Quite correct - '72 was the first year for factory-hardened exhaust valve seats. But "lead substitute" doesn't offer any significant benefit and really isn't needed in most pre-1972 slant-6s, and it costs a fortune not only in the additive itself but in much shorter spark plug life, increased fuel octane requirement due to combustion chamber deposits, etc. Search the board for the word "taffy" (no quotes) and read the relevant posts.

the additive I use costs around 6 dollars and is good for 160 gallons. (cd2 is the brand) I won't mind reading your posts, but I know 12,000 miles ago on my poly 318 I adjusted my valves, and they are still good to this day, it is my daily driver. My exhaust valves have not sunk. My experience tells me its cheap insurance, and I believe they started hardening the seats for a reason. Also the plugs in the same engine have always had a good color. Like I said this isn't bench racing, this is real world experience. I won't be testing theory to save 6 dollars and possibly ruin a head. Thanks for the info though.

I daily drive my 67 Dart 225/904.I never use the lead rip off substitute!I live in So.Cal so when I say daily drive I mean high freeway speeds,rush hour traffic,stop and go etc... I put about 2,000 miles on her a month.No problems whatsoever.Save your money.

Dan, that last reply seams a little terse, I apologize. My wife had called me to dinner and I was in a hurry. Since the engine is a 77 there is no worries, but to sum up my point above, my 64 poly is a sweet running engine and is clean. I usually have to buy the additive every 8 months or so, so its not hurting me financially. Thank you for your input though, its always welcome.
