First off let me give a lil history about my knowledge of ... The last 2 cars that I have owned and modified have been GM cars with destributerless electronic ignitions. Now this 1970 Plymouth Valiant is the first "real" car that I have personal worked on. So, when it comes to this style ignition system, I am pretty much floored by the amount of info that I have came across in my research on this and other forums Can somebody please help me with a straight forward answer on what parts I would need and where I could get the parts to convert my /6 to an electronic ignition. I am using my Valiant for an every day driver. The only thing I am really doing to my /6 is upgrading parts that have been bettered over the years by research and technology, and fixing things that have deuterated due to time, mother nature, and the previous lack of maintanence. The only thing that I am getting for her as far as performance matters is a good set of headers (in which I have already inquired about here on this forum and received great information on). and before anyone tells me to use the search feature... I have! PLEASE HELP |

The best electronic ignition upgrade you could do to your car would be to upgrade it to HEI ignition. See HERE The easiest upgrade would be to switch to a Pertronix ignition system. Pertronix ignition fits in your stock distributor and takes the place of the points. |

PLEASE HELP If you want "simple, adequate, and reliable" then either the HEI install or putting in a standard Mopar system would be perfectly adequate. I've got one car running HEI and another running stock Mopar, and performance-wise you can't tell the difference. I've even got it set up so that I can switch the HEI car over to Mopar electronic by moving two plugs under the hood, and I swear I can barely tell the difference on the same car, same day- maybe just a little better idle with less loading up using HEI. HEI is technically better for all the reasons pointed out in the links Reed posted, and I continue to use it. Its also simple and available. But then so is the Mopar system. Your pick. Pertronix wins the simplicity award, but I personally like to use OEM parts that I can buy immediately at the NAPA in Cactus Crotch, TX (ie. anywhere that's an hour west of the middle of nowhere) when I'm on a road trip and something gets sick. |

I have just purchased a complete standard Mopar electronic ignition system for my 72 Dart Swinger. I will need a good coil also, right? Which one would you guys recommend? Blaster 2 or is there one better? Thanks! Bill |

I would just buy a stock coil intended for the electronic ign.,and a good set of wires like Moroso blue max. |

I am running a Blaster 2 but Accel has some good Super Stock coils for electronic ignition like their ACC-8140M. (Summit Racing catalog number) I am using the Summit 8mm blue wires SUM-G825 which are very nice. |

And the conflicting answers continue. Hard to know where to go - yes. I am with Josh on the HEI, or a std Mopar EI conversion. These are cheapest and easy with "off the shelf" parts store parts. I have done all of these and other types. The simplest one I have done is the Pertronix conversion into a points distributor. $75 and two wires. This has worked well on the street, and up to 6000 RPM in my roadrace car, even with a stock coil. Lou |
