OK, just how difficult should it be to replace the harmonic balancer? I have been trying to get mine on for days. I have the nut in the crankshaft and have been sawin' away with a 4 foot breaker bar with all the strength I can muster, and it has barely moved past half way. I have about worn myself out! It's too tight a fit in there for my impact gun. I have removed the radiator but there's a big brace in the way. By the way, how far does this thing have to go on? Is there like a "pop" when you get it all the way on? Or some kind of positive stop like on my Ford Ranger? Or do I just eyeball it in place and when the pulleys line up I'm done? |

Something is wrong here. Thevibration dampener is a snug fit, but it should be fairly easy to get on. I have hammered them on with a rubber mallet and used the crankshaft bolt to snug them down. My first suspicion is that the key on the crank snout has slipped out of position or the dampener is not lined up correctly with that key. |

This may be a stupid suggestion , but have you tried to use some sandpaper on the shaft to smooth it out . Dave |

Well, the keyway is lined up perfectly, so no worries there. But the sandpaper idea may have some merit. I will try to remove the damper again and hit it with a little emery cloth to see if that helps. My poor arms are worn out, and it is supposed to snow later today. Aaargh!!!! |

This maybe a low temperature problem. I have found that things assembled in warm weather, come apart rather hard when cold. Try warming up the balancer to about 100 degrees F, and sliding it onto the cold crank. |

Makes sense; it has dropped 10 degrees in the last hour! I gotta get this project rolling. I've already hit it with the emery cloth, so now I'll heat `er up. |

I took it back off and discovered why all the trouble: somebody beat the crap outta the crank snout. Looked like a woodpecker had gone nuts in there. I used some emory cloth and lubed up the inside of the damper with furniture polish (old trick I learned) and presto! Now to install the water pump. Too cold right now though! |

Actually, the Might Chicken Warrior also dates back to Hawaii. But yeah, I'm close to Chatta Hoochie and hope to be a ...gulp... VW employee some day. My mailing address is actually Georgia, but you know how it is living on a border between 3 states and two time zones. "It's not a question of where he grips it. It's a simple question of weight ratios" Locked thread imminent.... |
