If you don't need to disassemble the distributor you don't need to remove the reluctor. In fact you can take the shaft out of that distributor without removing the reluctor at all. By the appearance of the distributor rust is keeping the reluctor from sliding off the shaft.

Forget the gear puller. Get two large flat bladed screw drivers. Put the heads of them opposite each other under the body of the reluctor, not the spikes. Gently pry up on the reluctor using even pressure on both screwdriver.

Forget pulling the reluctor. The rust you see is of no consequence. Clean it off using bronze(!) wool in situ if it bothers you, but it won't get you anywhere in terms of improving how the vehicle runs.

Now Dan, Reed and Joshie....

Guys! You surprise me! I KNOW he doesn't have to pull the reluctor, but he wants to. So how to do it? Reed, I can't imagine if a gear puller wouldn't do the deal that a pair of screwdrivers would. That shaft will come out by the roots, then I would just put the reluctor on the plates of a shop press and pop it off.....AFTER polishing off the rust on the top of the shaft. I sure wouldn't use sandpaper because it is so easy to pull off .005 to .010 on a round shaft.

Even more I am curious about that rust. how did it get in there? was that dizzy under water? No cap and no hood in a junkyard? Man with that rust accumulation I'd be pulling that shaft just to see if I even wanted the dizzy.

As I think Ron Parker said once, "just my .02 worth"

I have never had to use a gear puller on a reluctor. I have always had success with two screwdrivers. I have encountered some stubborn reluctors before, but I always won in the end. Sometimes a gear pull can be more trouble than its worht, plus I am unsure about the size and pulling force of a gear puller appropriately sized for a distributor reluctor. I think you would get much more force using two long screwdrivers as levers ras opposed to a single screw in a puller.

I had a less severe rusted shaft and reluctant reluctor that needed to be repositioned lower, and needed to examine the governor & springs. Pounding it back down didn't seam the smart course of action. The only way I was able to remove it was with a small gear puller. It did not pull off easily.

I than polished the shaft with a bit of 600 grit sand paper, and 0000 steel wool & WD 40. After removing the corrosion, the dizzy pressed snugly back on the shaft to the correct position, and was than movable with two screw drivers.
