| Post subject: | Can rusted headers be successfully painted? |
I have decided to perform an exploratory head removal to determine what if any modifications have been made, as I have no history of any work done to this car... I'm intending to end up with gasket matched cleaned up runners and light porting, over sized valves, and a head shave when done (Yeah I hear you now, a little of the top, blah, blah, blah) hopefully yielding a bit more compression, and better breathing. Presently the highest compression readings were around 140 psi, the lowest 125 psi. While the head is off, I would like to paint the lightly rusted & pitted Clifford Headers to clean things up a bit under the hood. Any suggestions as to what to use for paint on the headers, as well as the Clifford intake manifold? |

The hi-temp paint won't stick to rust......... And the special paint that will stick to rust (POR-15) flakes off with heat........... |

You'll need access to a bead blaster,just did mine a few months back(I've got a friend with a nice cabinet blaster). I used VHT high temp black on the headers and VHT engine paint on the intake.So far everything is holding up real good. Both my intake an headers are the clifford units and the header paint flaked off like right now when first installed so the VHT is a major inprovement.

I've tried the autoparts store's high temp paint spray paint; lasted about only minutes of driving despite very careful prepwork. POR-15 does make a high-temp paint; I've bought some, but not tested it yet. The standard POR-15 silver didn't hold up well (some hours of driving) on my exhaust and mufflers except for the exhaust tips, where it still looks great. |

The POR15 hitemp paint isn't a rust bonder like their other paint.Still need to get rid of all the rust for it to adhere. |
