I saw these at Six States Distributors on Saturday and wondered if Dan could chime in and state whether or not these are worth owning. They look pretty bad, but I'm no expert. What say you Dan?

This is very pretty junk made in China by Nunseing Sirius, who are very well practiced at producing toy lights with counterfeit DOT or ECE approval/certification markings. The claims of 300% and 225% better performance than DOT minimums are pure baloney. These barely comply with the old pre-1997 beam specifications and require the use of those mechanical aim gadgets nobody has any more (and nobody used correctly thirty years ago). I'm curious: did you notice the price @ Six States?

I'm kind of surprised to see Truck-Lite (a generally reputable company) still selling this Chinese dreck. When they first started selling Nunseing's lights about 3 years ago, they had massive problems with drivers unable to see and bulb shields breaking off inside the headlamp. Local reps got their butts handed to them (y'don't tug on Superman's cape, y'don't piss into the wind, y'don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger, and y'don't sell trash to truckers…). Instead of telling the Chinese to shove off, or at least refusing to sell the product until it's all the way right, Truck-Lite evidently have followed the now-common practice of using their customers as alpha testers ("Oops, back to the drawing board…"), beta testers ("Oops, nope, still not right…"), delta testers ("Maybe getting a little closer…let's keep trying"), and gamma testers ("This time for sure! Oops…") for every new wave of noncompliant garbage the Chinese send over. :-( On the other hand, I'm kind of not surprised, either; the U.S. rep for Sirius' stuff is quite the pitchman. He could sell space heaters to the devil.

There are lots of clear-lens 7" round headlamps on the market. Not a single one of them is worth buying. The guys with brand-new Jeep JK Wranglers throw their OE lamps away and install 1974-technology H4s so they can see at night! Pretty sad, it doesn't have to be this way; once the design phase is done it doesn't cost much (or any) more to make a good headlamp than a bad one. But style and bling are where the focus is for most of the aftermarket headlamps. The performance regulations are very lax, particularly in North America.

If you're looking for better headlamps and don't want to spend a lot of money, pay $40 at www.amazon.com for a pair of H6024NH (GE Night Hawk sealed beams). If you want really good headlamps and have some money to put into it, come rattle my cage ;-)

Dan,

I didn't ask the price. I wonder how they get away with labeling them as Made in USA?

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures, but that's all I had at the time.

I have a pair of the GE Nighthawk lamps in my Valiant and they are sold locally. Remember Fred Meyer? They stock 'em. If I drove the car much at night I'd be asking you for Bosch or Cibie. Might still do that, but not today.

They get away with saying "Made in USA" by means of a simple yet powerful technique known as lying.
