If I understand you correctly, your ammeter is reading discharge which may be a problem. At idle it's pretty common for the system to be discharging at a low rate but as soon as you bring the RPMs up it should swing to the right and show some charging current. If it is not doing that then you have a problem with one or more of the alternator, regulator, and/or the vehicle wiring. The alternator and regulator can be tested at a reputable auto parts store, or better yet, a good automotive electrical repair facility. If you don't already have a Factory Service Manual, you would be well served to pick one up ASAP. Avoid the paperback Haynes books as they are pretty much a waste of your time and money; get a real FSM. DO a search and you can find where Dan has posted sources for FSM and other recommended repair guides. Good Luck.

it also could be your alt. just went out. Does it read "D" all the time or does it fluctuate? I would go down to a local parts store and have them check it...most will to if at little or no cost.....i know that in my experience if its pointing towards the "D" and i disconnect the battery and it dies 9 time out of 10 its been my alt. only once has it been my voltage reg. not sayin' it wont be but mines always been the alt.......i'm lucky like that
