When I got my 62 225 it came with an extra set of Champion RN14YC plugs. I was going to use them but after reading an excellent article here, Autolight 925 plugs were recommended without gaskets. It's probably a less than perfect question but are plugs all that different on a stock motor and what is the issue with gaskets? I'm going to assume that it's to put the plug further into the center of the combustion chamber. Thanks. Joe |

You can use the RN14YC plugs, but Champion plug quality has been variably bad over the years and the extended-nose plugs work better. Autolite plugs are now made poorly in China; use NGK ZFR5N instead. '60-'62 heads do use the metal ring washers ("gaskets") on the spark plugs, while '63-'74 heads do not. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions, including a link to the spark plug gasket information, can be found in this thread. |

Thanks Dan. As always your advice/information is greatly appreciated. I've already gotten the new tube seals and thought I should check before digging in. Glad I did. Thanks. Joe Dan, I'm sending you a PM about a small issue I've got. |

Dan, are you sure of the NGK ZFR5N plugs?? NAPA looked at me like I was nuts. OK, they always look at me that way but they couldn't cross the number. Thanks. Joe That last PM I sent you, the issue has been settled. |

Yes, ZFR5N is a good number. NGK uses 2 different numbers, a stock number and a part number. The stock # for ZFR5N is 3459, you may want to try giving your parts store that. |

Joe, did you talk to them on the phone about those plugs? Cause I picked some up today and when I called the guy first said he couldn't find that number, but it turns out he thought I was saying the last part number was a M and not the N it should be, after we cleared that up he found them and I went and picked them up. |

Ask for a plug for a '90's Jeep with the 4L 6cyl engine. Should list the ZFR5N plug for them. |

Thanks guys, Again a lot of information. I had talked to the guy with my little piece of paper in my hand with part numbers on it. To be fair, I sometimes can't read my own hand writing and I do tend to mumble. But, these guys are used to me. It's a small town and when you visit them often enough, like once a week, and always ask for weird stuff, like Valiant stuff, they tend to remember you. They always have tried hard to come up with something that will work. Thanks again Joe |

To throw another wrench into the discussion here: has anyone yet found a good extended nose plug for '75-up (no drool tube) heads? I know some have been researching it, and I searched with no results but was curious if maybe I just missed something. I've been using the OEM spec NGK plugs since I got my Duster a couple years ago. |

hello, is there any visual method of identifying an early head that needs the spark plug washers left on? I have read as much about the removal of washers on 63 - 74 heads, bvut I have never seen mentioned how you tell the difference. just the early ones 60 -63. I have no way of knowing what the head on my engine is date wise, just that it is a drool tube type. Someone with a pic perhaps,or point me to an old post.My searches have not really answered that question. Engine is a 225, BTW. using ZFR5N plug.ATM,the washers are still on. I know,I am naughty, but I want to be sure of the plug seat type. the car is a 67 Aussie Valiant, but has had at least 2 engine changes that I know of. regards ,Rod |
