I can't find the colors for the start or run wires to use for the ignition module I want to put on my 87 truck to convert away from lean burn. I had a mechanic go through a few years of alldata but we couldn't find a wiring diagram for it. I have a 71 Mitchell manual that shows the module wiring but the full wiring diagram in it is for a points car. Can I use any of the wires going to and from the voltage regulator on the firewall? One is dark blue which got my attention. I'm hoping to get a full kit from jimsautoparts in the 4 wire orange module but I'd settle for a 5 wire if I have to.

I just did this on my 87. I used the field wir to the alternator or you can use the + coil wire I think it is. I know the field wire works,I used the one on top just under the big wire that goes to the stud.

Finally got around to mounting the ECU(its a 5 wire). I'm still not sure I've got it figured out yet. For a single resistor setup the #3 isn't used and the #2 is the (-)coil and 4,5 go to the distributor. I'm looking at the single resistor diagram and I guess I'm getting lost at what to do with the IGN. #2 "B" and IGN #1 "C". If I look at the other diagram with the picture of the orange ECU I'm confused with what to do with the yellow wire and/or the dark blue wire. I think I found the starter relay on the driver's side fenderwell with a juicy looking yellow wire about a foot back from the battery. Is this the wire I need to hook the yellow wire to from the new harness from the ecu?

God I have slept since then. I cant remember what we did. Remember that the colors on your EI harness dont match up with the 87 harness. The 87 was a lean burn and the pigtail for the EI is from a different year.
Did you get an EI coil? Where are you at now?
There are wiring diagrams at my mopar.com I think.

My ECU looks just like the one shown in the mymopar directions. I haven't bought the resistor yet because I'm not sure whether to use the dual ballast or single ballast resistor. I'd like to do it just like the picture shows. Do I just not hook the green/red wire up to anything? The current distributor is a dual pickup one so I have two plugs I assume will not be used. The black/yellow wire (#2 ECU pin)is labeled to go to the neg coil. I believe the old neg coil wire needs to be disconnected. Do I need a different coil than what I have now? I understand you can use a field wire instead of hunting the Main ignition feed wire? I don't fully understand what to do with the starter relay yet. I know I need the power from there but don't know if the old wire is disconnected or remains. My start relay resembles the "b" type.

The main ignition wire you want is the large blue wire that went to the computer. I did an 87 years ago, and used a single ballast, the same coil, and a single pickup distributor. Hope that helps.

My 87 was a single ballast as well. You need to get an EI distributor. The lean burn one wont work as there is no vac advance. Get with Duster Idiot and see if he has a recurved for sale for you. He does GREAT work.

Very helpful info, thanks guys. I reread the last parts of the mymopar instructions and I finally think I can do this right. After looking again last night, I actually have a start relay that does have a ballast bypass so I did get that wired in. All the wires are in and ready for connectors and a resistor. The biggest obsticle, now, is figuring out what ohm ballast resistor to use.
