I went to put my steering column in, and it magically got shorter. I switched it from coulmn shift to floor shift, and it shrunk some how. Its the same shaft, lower housing, and internals as the column shift, except the column shifter is out. Its still about 1/2 inch too short. Is it possible that that the box moved a little? The car is up in the air, due to the trans.

The steering column is collapsible so you don't get speared thru the chest in a crash. Sounds like yours has collapsed and will need to be "reset"/rebuilt. Refer to your factory service manual for info.

yes. however, even if the 'webbed' area collapses, you would be left with the actual shaft protruding. it too collapses- look for two or three holes near the middle of the shaft (lengthwise) filled with plastic. on paper, the plastic shears and allows the two pice shaft to telescope as you push it forward with yer sternum...

I've replace those broken plastic shear pins with nylon screws; they seem to be about the right strength and size.

Do you realize the coupler and steering wheel have master splines and only go on one way?
