Well, I brought home my new project weekend before last. I got the exhaust fixed up and the car sounds great. I have been driving it around the neighborhood a bit, but with the current 3sp trans and 4:10 rear I can't go much over 50-60 mph without ear plugs and a fear of scattering engine parts everywhere

She is a strong running slant. I think when I get the 4sp OD trans fixed and back in I'll see a huge difference. I thought I'd post some pics to start out and post occasionaly when I get more done to her

1974 225, 30 over with a rebuilt bottom end
MP Purple Shaft cam (seller says .490 lift with 268 duration) ??
Head was milled, oversized valves, 1.700" intake, 1.440" exhaust, ported, dual spring valve springs
MP Orange Box Ignition
Offy Aluminum 4bbl intake
500 CFM Carter (says weber on the side too) carb
2X3 Clifford Headers
Flex fan (going away when i do Ted's elec fan upgde)
3 speed manual trans (going away too!)
8.25 suregrip rear with 4:10 gears and 11 inch drums
MP SS Rear Springs
All new front end parts excepting LCA bushings
Large bolt pattern all around w/ disc front brakes

Congrats! Looks like a snorter! Can't wait to see it run on the track. If the guy knew how to do the head porting and set things up, it should be pretty fast. I would just leave the 3spd in it and enjoy it for a while, unless you need to commute with it or something mostly hwy.

What's the rear tire size? You could get a set of 26"+ tall tires (225/75-15) for hwy driving.

Could be your tach is set to the "4cyl" option, meaning it's reading a higher RPM than you're really turning. 70 MPH should be 4000 RPM give or take. I've cruised my '64 Dart across the country at 3400 RPM.

Paint!

In the interest of a budget minded build I've decided to try a roller paint job on this car. I first read about this 3 years or so ago over at the moparts site. The basic idea is to roll on a thinned out mixture of Rust Oleum paint diluted with mineral spirits. Details here:

Anyhow I pulled the trunk deck off this past weekend and started work on it as a test panel. Right now I am just in the prep stages with it. Ugh, I hate sanding But a necessary evil.

I will post pics here as I progress. If this works out I was considering new yellow paint for the Valiant

I thought the roller method was 1 part rolling paint and 475 parts sanding...

That'll keep you busy!

1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper is kinda fun to find. I bought mine from a Carquest with a paint department. There has got to be a less expensive way to go though....

That's what I worry about. I plan on roller painting my Swinger (someday). But they guy who came up with this technique roller painted his '69 Charger in a week or two, so it can't be that bad, can it?

'Course, he's an experienced painter and bodyman...

Eric, you really think so!? Don't get me wrong, in high school I'd have driven that baby around thinking I was ALL THAT Now........Ummm I'd kind of like to have it one solid color without the rust hole air conditioning. Amazing the differnce 20 years has made in me!

Well, this photo is of coat #3, and the right half of the deck has been wetsanded in prep for coat 4. I am now finally getting coverage to the point where the transparancy of the paint is going away. It really is an interesting process. Tedious though. But, as I have more time than money I'll keep at it.

I think this is going to take about 6 coats to get it where I need it before polishing. Having a TOTALLY flat panel seems to be the key. Any irregularities in the surface kind of screw you up, but I am learning ways to avoid that. The first coat got almost completely sanded off. And I still haven't got my mixture down pat, but I'm learning quickly
