Post subject: | Coil for lower rad hose |
Just got a lower radiator hose from Napa and it doesn't have the coil inside it that the old one did. Read in FSM that coil keeps hose from constricting due to pressure/vacuum forces. Have they reformulated the rubber so that this coil is no longer needed? |

I don't know about any material changes for hoses, probably there has been a few. I just pull out the coil from the old hose, and installed it into the new one. |

That's the claim exactly, is that the current-production hoses are structurally improved so as not to need the coil. That's probably a reliable statement if the correct hose is fitted correctly. If you try to force too long a hose to fit without cutting it down, such that there are near-kinks at the bends, it's probably going to restrict flow. |

just to be safe i put the old coil in. here is the procedure for anyone else who wants to go this route. i cut a slit in the old hose lengthwise, pulled the slit open with my fingers, and then it was real easy to open it up all the way down to pull out the coil. put the coil in the end of the new hose with the sharpest bend, then twist it clockwise as you push and it will work its way through. the last bend is the trickiest. i was able to reach in with some wire strippers, grab the end of the coil and pull it through the bend. thanks for all the responses.
