| Post subject: | Planned HEI upgrade |
I have been reading and re-reading the HEI conversion stickie and have a question or two; What is the purpose of the relay you suggest adding? I'll admit my knowledge of electrical systems could be better, but I'm not sure why I need it or where to run the "trigger" feed from. Also, It's repeatedly stated in the article that HEI modules are inexpensive. All the ones I can find new are in the $150 range (I'm going spelunking at the local wrecking yard this weekend to try to find the coil/module combo pictured in the article, so this may be a non-issue...). Lastly, How much up-and-down play is too much on an EI distributor? The one I nabbed has a fat sixteenth of play. I know how to fix this last problem (if I need to), but if I'm within the expected range, I'd rather leave it be. Thanks in advance, Nat |

The relay's job is to feed full power to the module — the factory ignition wiring has a hard time coping with the current draw of the HEI, so without the relay you get voltage drop, so the module doesn't fire reliably. A relay is simply an electrically-operated switch. You put the factory ignition wire on relay terminal #86, ground relay terminal #85, run a nice 14- or 12-ga wire via a fuse from a reliable, clean source of +12v to relay terminal #30, and another such 14- or 12-ga wire from relay terminal #87 to the HEI module and coil + feed terminals. It's easiest to use a relay with dual #87 terminals (watch out for relays that have one #87 and one #87a; not the same thing). $150?!!! Are you quite sure you're asking for the right part? That is more than triple what the HEI modules generally cost. Figure $45 or so for a premium (Standard/BlueStreak #LX-301) 4-pin HEI module. |

Thank you sir. I knew I was missing something. Can you recommend a good relay with the dual 87 terminal? I'm talking Part numbers here. Quote:

I've been searching Napaonline for the part. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong vehicle. What's an appropriate vehicle to be looking for (that tidbit will probably come in handy at the junkyard too......)?Thanks again, Nat |

Sheee. Problem is, up here they crush anything older than about 1990. Anything newer than that likely to have the parts I need?

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. |

Whatchya need a vehicle for? I gave you a part number for the module! Relay: Bosch 0 332 019 151, plus associated terminals and base/bracket. I keep 'em in stock, and so does every other Bosch stockist. |

yeah, but if I order from you, I'll have to get relays for the headlights, new cibié sealed beams and the total cost of this project more than doubles. Relay: Bosch 0 332 019 151, plus associated terminals and base/bracket. I keep 'em in stock, and so does every other Bosch stockist. |
