Hey there guys,

Im new here, but a member of FABO and BBD. I am currently in the process of mating a 340 to a wc t5 that i pulled out of a 90 mustang. I have th conversion bellhousing, and plan on using the stock mechanical mopar clutch linkage for the swap. However, I have ran into a slight problem- i took a measurement of the t5's input shaft where the throwout bearing resides and the diameter is 1.431. I had a member on FABO measure the diameter of his stock mopar throwout bearing, and its diameter is only 1.25. My only other option is to go hydraulic unless i can figure out what throwout bearing to use. He suggested i either have the bearing retainer on the input shaft turned down to 1.25 if there is enough material for that (havent checked yet) or to come here...he said that he saw on FABO some guys talking about guys on slantsix.org performing the t5 swap with mechanical linkages...if anyone can help me out with this i would really appreciate it...If the throwout bearing idea doesnt work, is there another fork/throwout bearing combination/modification that you guys know of to make it work? everyone else has gone the hydraulic route, which i dont really want to do to save costs

Any help would be very greatly appreciated
thanks in advance
Matthew

Not a T5 but,,,,,

I used the stock Valiant bell, TB, fork and linkage when i put a 5 speed in my car. I turned down the input bearing retainer to Mopar TB size.

There are steel T5 bearing retainers available that might be a better idea to machine down.

what is the stock bearing retainer made out of? turning it down seems like an easy method, but i dont want to sacrifice strength...does anybody else who performed this swap have any tips on what t/o to use?

The stock retainer is aluminum. Mine has 2 kabillion miles on it after being machined.....zero issues.

If you think it will be a biggy buy the steel version. Summit racing....cheap

Before I decided to run a hydro setup, I bought a '66 Mustang TOB and modified it slightly to sit on the Mopar fork. That ID is same as T5.

what did you have to do to the 66 mustang T/O bearing in order to have it fit the mopar fork? have any pics? id rather go that route than turning down the retainer, though if turning down the retainer is my only option then thats the route ill have to go

I sold that whole setup to someone else about 5 yrs ago. Can't remember exactly how I modded it, but I think just some grinding on the fork teeth and bending the little retainer tabs on the TOB. It almost just fit together. Those TOB's should be dirt cheap so just pick one up and try it. Might have to specify for V8 Mustang trans (toploader?).

thanks for the info...yea im pretty sure it was a toploader back then...would there be any difference between small block to big block...I emailed Ram and told them that i need a throwout bearing to fit the t5 input shaft and work with the mopar pressure plate, and the gave me a part number (477) that they say is supposed to work...Dont know if any of you guys frequent moparts (i dont) but does anyone over there have this swap done without hydraulics involved? anyone else on here that might have more info...I read about a Sam powell- would he know anything about this?

I think Sam's is hydro too? Don't know about Ram. I just bought a stock '66 Mustang TOB.
