Post subject: | Starting Problems |
I just bought this dart and previous owner hotwired starter directly into the car. As long as key was turned to "on" touching the two wires together would start the car. It wouldn't start with regular key. I want to convert it back the correct way. This is what I have done so far: I have removed the "hotwire from the starter to the interior of the car. (2 wires on starter and two wire to interior...touch together and presto) I have rewired the starter to the battery and a new starter relay. It does not start. I have tried to start in nuetral to check the neutral safety switch...yet it still does not start. I do here a "light" clicking when I turn the key and it will start when I jump the two terminals on the starter with the key in the run position. I also do not know exactly where the neutral safety switch is located so I have not physically looked at that yet....Can anyone help me.???.....Sorry for the long post...perplexed.. |

Next test: ignition key in the "run" (normal driving) position, transmission in Park. Use your screwdriver to jump the two largest terminals on the starter relay. If the engine cranks and runs, get out your test light, remove the two small push-on wires from the starter relay, and check for battery voltage across the two wires (or across the one wire and ground) when the key is held in the "Start" position. If voltage is there, replace the starter relay. If no voltage there, check for voltage across the the + small relay wire and battery negative. If voltage there, the neutral safety switch is faulty or its wire is broken. If no voltage there, the ignition keyswitch or its wiring are suspect. The Neutral Safety Switch location depends on the year and model we're talking about here. If it's a '74 (just going by your screen name) then it is a combination neutral safety switch + reverse light switch, screwed into the driver's side of your transmission with a 3-wire rubber-booted plug going to it. |

Great information. I checked wiring all the way down to neutral safety switch and that is where I found the frayed wire. Replaced wire and now it fires right up. Thank you very much...I am sure I will have more questions...Thanks again. |

I had this problem past few days. Got around to checking it. Easier way is to ground the "g" wire on the starter relay and turn key. If it runs its your neutral saftey switch. And if youput power directly from battery to "ign" terminal on starter relay if it ddoesn't start its the relay itself. For me it was actually both issues at once. Starter relay fried, and old crusty wire from neutral saftey switch to relay. This was on 65 valiant. One wire safety switch, the wire is actually perminately attached to switch which I found fairly odd. |
