Hello,

About a week ago or so, I added to the family a '72 Scamp. The engine is running lousy and it has a pretty good exhaust leak. All the bolts to where the intake and exhaust manifolds meet (heat riser?) where loose, so I changed the steel gasket and tightened it down, then proceeded to torque the intake/exhaust manifold nuts. All I'm missing is the far rear exhaust stud.

I got the car started and it doesn't idle, runs a bit rough and bogs out a higher RPM's. Sometimes it will spit back out through the exhaust. I heard a loud knocking noise so I took the valve cover off. I discovered the rockers that where really loose.

I proceeded to set the valve lash on all the valves since I had the cover off. After adjusting all the valve lashes, I re-checked the rockers and they wobble side to side about a quarter of an inch.

What should I do? Can I rebuild the rocker assembly? Thanks!

Can you take a picture of the valve train with the cover off?

Some side to side play is normal. 1/4" is way excessive. There are supposed to be spacers between the rockers and under the screws to space everything out evenly. Maybe one of yours is missing or is out of order.

That amount of side-play is normal...
If it worries you alot... use wider bolt hold downs or center spacer rings to take-up the side play.

OK, I wasn't sure if it was or wasn't. Thanks so much for your time!
