Post subject:  Carb gasket help

Hopefully someone can help me out with this. I've got a '64 Valiant Signet with a 225 /6. Can't seem to get it to idle unless I set the timing about 30 BTDC. I did remove the carbuerator and noticed that there is a groove cut in the bottom of the base where it mounts to the gasket. In this groove there are two holes. One runs up to the Economizer Diaphram and I'm not positive where the other one goes to. Odd thing is, there is nothing in the gasket that would accomidate this grove. Does one of these little ports in the groove pull vacuum from the other one? Also my gasket has a hole to accomidate the PCV port but no holes for anything else. Is this correct? Thanks in advance for your help. Also this is the thick gasket (1/2")

Correction. The other hole goes to the Choke Vacuum Diaphram.

You need a carb base gasket with two notches for the power ("economizer") valve and the choke pull-off, and a 1/4" hole for the PCV. It looks like this:

Is that what your carb base gasket looks like? If not, you've got the wrong one. Try a Fel-Pro #60125 if you cannot get a Walker #G850, which is a better quality, grommeted gasket.

Thanks Dan. I ordered a new one that I'm going to pick up in about 1 hr. If it doesn't look like the one you posted above I'll order another. Hopefully this solves the idle problem. Still have an issue with the timing. Seems to run best at about 30 BTDC. Set at or near TDC the thing stumbles and dies. Got any possible cures for that? Checked and double checked valve lash (.011 and .021), plug wire arangement, plug gap, rotor location at TDC ,point gap and anything else I could think of. Can't seem to get above 10" of vacuum. Was hoping this gasket thing would be the fix all but thinking it will have nothing to do with timing problem. New carb., distributor, plugs and wires reworked head and timing chain set.
Thanks,
Jeff

You might get #1 piston to TDC and check to see if your timing mark on the damper is still correct. It’s mounted on rubber and can move.

Looks like getting the new gasket helped alot. Slapped the carb. back together and mounted with new gasket. Now I can get the timing and idle set where she'll start and run without the use of ether.
Thanks all
Jeff

Well, let's hear it for easy fixes! Image Your spark plugs are probably quite fouled, for the engine will have been running way too rich with the power valve always open. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread.
