Presently my engine is missing its head, its at the machine shop. My car came with a little 6"x2 1/4" air cleaner that needs to be replaced. If a few of you Slanters out there could tell me what size, diamerter, hight, and brand air cleaner you are using that would be helpfull.

Last year I attempted to step up to a larger unit, but ran into clearance problems with the hood insulation. Here in the boondocks, the two auto parts stores we have are devoid of any selection of air cleaners.

I have a 67' Dart equipped with a Clifford intake and Holley 4160 - 4 bl. (390 cfm) sitting on top of it.

That's interesting, I had some problems with air cleaners in a 62 Valiant, which by my memory seemed to have far less hood clearance than most later cars. Having problems with a 4bbl in a 67 Dart seems wacky too me, unless yours is just too tall... Before we went to a 4bbl we had a Super Six, and the huge air cleaner w/ snorkel was a little too big and hit the inside of the hood.

As far as I know with a 4 barrel a lot of people just use the generic chrome air cleaners or some type of stock 4bbl air cleaner or the ugly Mopar air cleaner. My dad still has the car, and I believe he's using a 2.25x14" chrome air cleaner, and it fits fine under our hood. I think it has a drop-base. Before he took it to Texas, I used a 2.25x11" non-drop-base (I think it was 2.25", if it wasn't exactly that it wasn't much bigger or smaller) K&N Air Cleaner which had just the right 'scale' appearance to me. The 14" air cleaners look rediculously huge to me on a Slant 6; seems to draw too much attention to itself. The 11" one looked a lot better to me and I plan on putting it on as soon as I get the car back. But anyway, 4bbl air cleaners are a pretty common accessory, it shouldn't be too hard to find one that fits under the hood of a 67 Dart.

In a case like yours, I would probably hit the wrecking yards for an original-equipment thermostatic air cleaner off of...just about anything with a 4bbl! This would make it easy to duct cold and hot air to the carb for improved driveability and economy whether cold or hot. Many/most of the OE air cleaner housings have significant drop between the carb mounting plane and the air filter seating plane, which helps a lot with hood clearance. Don't confine your search to just Mopars, either; I can think of a lot of GM and Ford air cleaners from the '70s thru late '80s that'd do just fine. Ford were making theirs out of lightweight stamped aluminum for awhile; have seen those as early as '80 and as late as '89...weight savings and it'll take a nice polish, if you wish.
