Locked keys in my duster

Post subject:  Locked keys in my duster
This is embarrasing. I locked my keys in my Duster. Is there anyway I can unlock the door without calling a locksmith?

Find a Slim Jim, it should work, but be gentle or you will be pulling door panels to reconnect lock linkage...

Insert it near the interior lock pop up button. Patiently fish around until the lock button starts to move, and slowly & gently lift up.

Get a second key made to keep in your wallet.

If you have patience and dont mind wrecking the door glass rubber there is the coathanger trick....

Back in the old days when I had a Challenger and a girlfriend who was from Kentucky, I saw a coat hanger in the backseat. I asked Ginny what it was for and she told me she had locked the keys in the car at work and kept the hanger in case she did it again. :shock:

I once was walking through a parking lot when a guy sitting inside a soft top Jeep yelled at me to help him out because he had locked himself inside his car. I'm not joking.

The door glass won't necessarily be wrecked; only if you're careless. You have an advantage here because you're working with the frameless door glass of a Duster, but even with full-frame door glass it can be done. I locked my keys in my '89 D100 in a parking lot in Michigan last year, very very far from home. Couldn't get a coathanger wire between the door and the doorframe, but I found I could sneak it between the top of the (very very very slightly rolled down just by vibration) glass and the doorframe. Think thru the angles you'll have to work thru to get enough wire on the inside of the glass, then bend the wire accordingly. Put a "V" bend in the very end with which to snag the door lock knob. The primary tool at work here is patience. The coathanger wire is secondary.

In 1975 in Baja I found out the kids could break into my 1951 DeSoto faster than I could open it using keys. I quit locking the car.

Slantzilla,
Most of the Hillbillys around here are fairly smart,its the recent influx of city folks that lack intelligence. :shock:

Where should the thing that I pull up on with the hanger be located? Under the lock? If so how far down?

You may have two options:

If your door lock "push-pull" rods (the thing one pushes to lock the door) have a head on them hook it with a "V" shaped bend and pull up.

If the push-pull rods are headless you will have to fish around in the door with the wire shaped like an "L" with an inch long leg. If you make a little wedge from wood, you can stick the wedge between the glass & door sill to free up a little working room to maneuver the wire in the door. Be genital, it won't take any more force than what you need to operate the push-pull rods. All the linkage is located from under the push-pull rod and over to the latch in the door jamb. You may be able to use a little "Mini Mag" flashlight light once the wedge is in place to see some of the linkage.

An other trick is to bend a "J" shape in the wire, and come up under the push-pull rod where it screws onto the linkage. Catch the end of the wire between the threaded rod and the push-pull knob and gently pull up.
