I'm having problems with my '72 Gold Duster. It all started with an intermittent stalling during warmer weather. I assumed that I had some moisture in the fuel line, however, the car began to miss so badly that I could barely get it home. Sometimes, the car would run well for several miles, but then without warning, the miss would start. The car now idles fine, but is not drivable due to this problem. I've replaced the plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, vacuum line to the distributor, battery, and the alternator. I noticed that my headlights would dim and my dash would go almost black when idling at night. I can't figure out what's causing the miss! The car bucks and sputters with slight backfiring and will stall if I let off of the gas. The distributor was rebuilt 1000 miles ago and looks good. Timing is set to TDC and the dwell is at 44degrees 750RPM.Can anyone offer me any advice? I have a cracked exhaust manifold. Could this be causing this type of problem? jbrig@enter.net |

My first guess is the coil, and then the distributor. I once had a bad crimp connection at the coil that acted much the same. Quote:

I also think there is something "shorting-out" in the ignition system. I would "hot wire" right to the coil to test. (run a wire from the + side of the battery to the + side of the coil) If the problem goes away when hot wired, the problem is somewhere along the ignition circuit leading to the coil. If the problem continues, the issue is in the coil or distributor. DD Quote:

I replaced the coil and the wire from the distributor to the coil after the problem started. The coil was one of my first guesses. I also noticed that my #1 and #6 plugs were carbon fouled after only 1000 miles. I just replaced the whole set. I also think there is something Quote:

How's your gas tank? Put in one of those clear glass fuel filters with replaceable elements and watch for signs of rust in the fuel. The fine rust can clog a new filter and coat the carb innards in an amazingly short time, causing all sorts of mayhem and phantom symptoms. dobie79423@yahoo.com |
